About the Author
A native of Long Island, New York, Robert Koehler has lived in Korea since 1997. He works for Seoul-based publishing company Seoul Selection, where, among other things, he serves as editor-in-chief of the monthly travel magazine SEOUL. In addition to SEOUL SELECTION GUIDES: KOREA, he authored SEOUL SELECTION GUIDES: SEOUL and co-authored the walking tour guide SEOUL'S HISTORIC WALKS. Robert currently lives in Seoul's Itaewon neighborhood with his wife Solongo. When he's not writing or blogging, he can often be found traveling about the Korean countryside, photographing historic architecture.

Excellent, helpful, and well worth it

They've done it again. As a follow-up to the excellent 'Seoul' from 2011, Robert and the Seoul Selection team have produced another winner in 'Korea'.
If you've read 'Seoul', the only major difference is the scope. Covering the country better than Lonely Planet and hitting almost as many of the off-the-beaten-path places as the Moon guidebook, the compelling case to travel Korea is made over the volume's 750-odd pages.
Instead of simply copying-and-pasting the Seoul section from his previous book, the author seemed fit to work his way through the city with a fresh spin. Robert's personal passions of architecture and historical sites are easy to see, and more than a few of the historical tales don't appear at the sites themselves.
The country is comprehensively covered, from the ruins of the Workers Party of Korea headquarters in the far north to the far-flung islands in the southern sea. The majority of places merit a paragraph or two explaining the story or history, but quite a few places are called out for an exceptional experience or moment in time. To be sure, not every possible place is covered or thoroughly mentioned, but a book that did that might not fit in your backpack!
The full-color pictures throughout the book are a strong highlight, as are the maps and directions. Korean hangeul is used throughout the book, and a six-page primer offers some basic survival phrases. Curiously, a hangeul chart is missing. If coming to Korea, there are plenty to be found on the Internet, perhaps printed and glued into the back of the book. See the Wikipedia page for a brief primer, or just print one out.
There's almost nothing bad to say about this book. On one level, it's a high-quality, well-printed book - this in contrast to guidebooks' propensity to use thin paper for their photo-light layouts. The book weighs a bit more as a result, and could conceivably double as a coffee-table style book if you were so inclined.
If coming to Korea or you're already here, there's no reason not to pick it up. If your edition of Lonely Planet, Moon, or Frommer's feels a little old, replace it with this one. The price is cheaper in Korea (as most Seoul Selection books are), and is well worth even the price in dollars.

Good book but author isn't critical enough about what's worth seeing.

I'm just back from my first trip to Korea and I used this as my primary guidebook.
The author is obviously very passionate about Korea, especially traditional Korean culture and history, and it shows. But in my opinion he's overly positive about everything and this makes it very difficult to determine which sights are worth seeing and which aren't on a limited schedule. Many of the sights he mentions will be of no interest to the average traveler unless you have a diehard interest in Korean history or a good deal of imagination. An artificial pond or a few rocks in a field that are apparently ancient ruins become a place to (quote) "happily spend the day with a bottle of makgeolli rice wine, watching the willow trees and contemplating the city's former greatness." An incense burner in a museum becomes something (quote) "you could stare at for hours and not feel the time pass." Every temple or park mentioned is one of the "most important" or "most beautiful" or "most idyllic" in Korea.
The author's interest in traditional Korea also causes the book to be somewhat lacking if you are interested in modern, high-tech Korea. For example, he completely omits mention of the area around Gangnam station in Seoul, which I found one of the more exciting parts of the city, rivaling the nightlife of Tokyo or Osaka and definitely worth seeing if you are more interested in modern Korea rather than visiting yet another temple or contemplating an incense burner for hours. Or the e-sports stadium on the top floor of the electronics mall in Yongsan where you can walk in on a professional Starcraft match - an experience you can only have in Korea, but also omitted in this book.
I would have appreciated more recommendations for Korean restaurants. His restaurant recommendations (in Seoul especially) tend towards foreigner bars or cafes serving Western food. It's not like I came all the way to Korea so I could socialize with foreigners and eat the same food as I could at home? Unlike in Japan where there are pictures and plastic models of food all over the place it's more difficult to find good places to eat Korean food in Korea if you don't know the language well.
The town maps included are mostly useless, giving a poor sense of scale and distance, which is a problem because the tourist maps you often get in Korean towns are also cartoony, useless and not to scale. The transportation info is often somewhat lacking and usually oriented towards day-trippers from Seoul rather than someone traveling through the country.
The included Korean phrases, while helpful, lack useful ones like "can you please take my picture?"(which I really prefer saying rather than thrusting a camera at a stranger and grunting and making hand motions) or "two tickets for Busan please" or "can I leave my luggage here?" but strangely includes "please ring up the bill", which was always met with incomprehension whenever I used it in Korea because you generally just go and stand around at the cashier when you're ready to pay rather than the US style of a bill being brought to your table.
Don't get me wrong, this is a good book, with almost every tourist site in Korea of note included, with nice pictures and printed on good paper, but it's far from perfect. Probably best suited towards someone based in Seoul already familiar with Korea who is interested in making day trips to other parts of the country, rather than someone traveling there for the first time.

This is the S.Korea guidebook to have

I have only had this book in my possession for a few weeks, but during this time I've hosted a few guests and found this to be an invaluable resource for first-time visitors. Indeed, this guidebook offers a comprehensive picture of all there is of cultural and historical significance (including elsewhere overlooked sites and regions) outside of and manageable as a day trip away from the major cities to see. Moreover, I think other readers, who perhaps like me may not have hours to Web surf the English and Korean language blogs in order to put together travel itineraries will want to keep this worthwhile guide handy. I especially appreciate the way the book is organized by geographic regions with easy to understand maps, includes tips that can range from the best time of day and even when in the year to visit, and contains suggestions for locally-favored eateries and beautiful scenic spots that fall well within a budget traveler's means. All in all, I think this is a great guidebook for both visitors and long-term residents.
