My two cents

I used this textbook for a series of 3 graduate classes in Quantum Mechanics, in which we basically cover the first 26 chapters.

I think the textbook is easy to follow, one can learn with it the mathematical tools of QM. The one thing I don't like about the book is that is not a reliable reference book (in the sense that unless I went through the whole derivation of the equations I can't be sure that the equation is not missing an h bar, c or a minus), however you must consider that this is the first edition of the book.

Extremely Detailed Mathematics, Everything Derived for You

As a student of Dr. Desai's, I've had first-hand experience with working through this textbook, in the context of the author's own lectures. This book is extremely good for working through derivations of various quantum mechanics concepts, and mathematically, is quite rigorous. I think this book would be most useful for the graduate student theorist, who is perhaps not as interested in experimental application of quantum mechanics as an experimentalist.

The end of chapter problems are at times esoteric and mathematical, applying linear algebra to deconstruct an operator with no quantum mechanical context, however, often, the mathematics from these problems appear far ahead in the text. I would recommend the student also use another textbook to gain a more 'experimentalist' perspective on quantum mechanics.

This book contains some errors (it is only in its first edition). At times the errors are minor, but other times they can be more significant. The most common error seems to be false equation references, or a missing 'h-bar' and factors of 'c'. Very occasionally (I have seen one or two within the first 300 pages) there is a serious error, such as using an angular momentum vector instead of a magnetic field vector.

I think this book is an excellent resource, and is almost completely self contained. It will teach you the tools and mathematical back-bone of quantum mechanics, but leaves rigorous applications of the subject to the student's imagination.

Pleasant level of rigor, but fails to explain motivations.

B. Desai's book on Quantum Mechanics is well-written, but the book lacks structure. Rather than introducing the necessity for a topic, and its physical motivations, the book leaps into derivations of various phenomena, without giving any attention to why the steps in the proof are being taken. Consequently, I think this book is not particularly well-suited to self-teaching; it simply doesn't stand on its own. That being said, it makes an excellent supplement to another work. Whenever derivations or explanations have confused me in other books, Desai usually has a section dedicated to the topic at hand. If buying, I would recommend doing so in conjunction with R. Shankar's Quantum Mechanics. My other minor problem with the text is that it's very dry. Because there are so few explanations as to the motivation for the mathematics, the unending proofs quickly become tiresome.

Dipaolo's book satisfies intellectual curiosity on many levels

The book jacket features a picture of Iron Man and the word "Superheroes" in all caps, but there is so much more within the covers. While Dipaolo offers a rich helping of superheroes in comics, television and film, each of his chapters opens a virtual cornucopia of America's social and political history, with a primary focus on attitudes about war and politics, as promised in the title. Dipaolo weaves a delightful and informative web of connections between popular culture and politics with crystal clarity and lively writing informed by extensive research. If you're interested in where we are and how we got here, this is a must read.

Very Interesting Read

This is a fascinating application of politics into superhero comics. The chapter titles are interesting and hysterical. Examples include, "President Obama vs. the Zombie Apocalypse" and " The Punisher as Murderous Immigration Officer and Vietnam War Veteran." The content is definitely biased, but he provides strong evidence for his statements. It covers all figures from the X-men to Thor to the Green Lantern to James Bond.

The Message Gets Lost in the Words

I think this is one of those reviews that I'm going to take some heat over because I know this book and the author are very popular in Christian circles right now. That's why I wanted to read it myself, because I had heard so much about it.

First, the positive. I know several bloggers who are sharing their own 1000 gifts/gratitude lists and I'm always blessed to read them. I have kept my own accounting of what I call "grace notes" for years so I understand the blessing of looking for things to be thankful for. Voskamp shares from her heart with stories about her family and her own spiritual journey, and I think anyone reading this book would come away with a heightened sense of looking for God's grace in daily life whether it be having one's child come through surgery or the admiring the beauty of a full moon. I appreciate the encouragement to live life fully right where we are without feeling we need to work through a "bucket list" of daring experiences or exotic locations before we can be fulfilled.

But, this was a difficult book for me to read. Voscamp is obviously a poet at heart but the entire book is sing-songy with long descriptions and awkward word phrases and metaphors that I found distracting. It doesn't read as someone would actually talk in real life conversation.

As an example: "...tonight over our farm will rise the Great Hexagon of the blazing winter stars - Sirius, Rigel, ruby Aldebran, Capella, the fiery Gemini twins, and Procyon, and in the center, scarlet Betelgeuse, the red supergiant larger than twice the size of earth's orbit around the sun - and I will embrace the skin of a boy child that my body grew from a seed. The low heavens outside the paned windows fill with more snowflakes than stars, no two-stacked crystals the same; the trees in the wood draw in collective green breath to the still of January hibernation, and God in the world with birth ice from His womb, frost of heaven, bind the chains of the Pleiades, loose the cords of Orion, and number again the strands on my head."

Those who like this kind of poetic narrative with mystical undertones will enjoy this book. Those who don't will likely struggle to find the message in the sea of words. For me, it was just too much page after page, and it took me a while to finish the book because I had to take it in small doses.

I was also wary of the mystical/contemplative spirituality/emergent church references, as she references those known to be mystics, panentheists, universalists, or New Age authors such as Brother Lawrence, Henri Nouwen, Annie Dillard, Brennan Manning, Sarah Ban Breathnach, Teresa of Avila, and Dallas Willard, among others. The influence of the teachings of these various authors is apparent in Voskamp's writing.

In addition, I was uncomfortable with the chapter on making love to Jesus in which the author speaks of seeking communion with God in what can only be termed as sexual language, taking it to a level that I personally don't believe scripture intends. Voskamp writes, "Mystical union. This, the highest degree of importance. God as Husband in sacred wedlock, bound together, body and soul, fed by His body, quenched by His blood . . . God, He has blessed - caressed. I could bless God - caress with thanks. It's our making love. God makes love with grace upon grace, every moment a making of His love for us. . . . couldn't I make love to God, making every moment love for Him? To know Him the way Adam knew Eve. Spirit skin to spirit skin. . . The intercourse of soul with God is the very climax of joy . . . To enter into Christ and Christ enter into us - to cohabit."

Scripture doesn't teach that our relationship with God is to be a sexual, orgasmic experience or that we are to know him the way Adam as husband knew Eve as his wife. Further, what are children and men supposed to do with the notion of making love to Jesus?

Despite the doctrinal and personal issues with this book, I tried to stay focused on what I felt the author's intended message of the book was: live fully and abundantly in daily life by being thankful for the gifts that come from God's grace, no matter how small. I am inspired to live more fully in this kind of gratitude.

This review is simply my opinion of what was actually in the book and not a reflection on the author herself, whom I do not know personally. Her writing style just doesn't appeal to me and I have to question some of the "theology" in the book which is why I recommend discernment when reading it.

Baffled

I am a little baffled by One Thousand Gifts. Baffled that everyone seems to love the book, baffled at the reviews, and baffled that I do not seem to be enjoying the book like I expected.

I have seen some major comment craziness over this book which causes me a little apprehension in sharing my thoughts because I don't particularly want to be stoned or have virtual banana peels throw my way. The truth is; however, I did not love it. I had to force myself to keep reading which having a review copy demanded.

Sure, I was touched by the sadness author Ann VosKamp has had to deal with and I wished it was not so for her. Plus, I think giving thanks to God is important; however, I found myself weighed down by her constant, poetical voice. It was hard to follow and taxing to read. Sometimes, I wanted her to say what she meant straight out and not make me search for the intended meaning nor be forced to reread sentences because of the unconventional wording. I personally feel that her prose works for short blog posts but not an entire book, and I wondered if the entire message of the book could be condensed into one or more blog posts that would have been just as encouraging.

As I was reading, there were sentences and sections that made me pause and want to line it up with truth. I wondered if in her manner, there were liberties taken. Just three of the parts that made me wonder were as follows:

"If clinging to His goodness is the highest form of prayer, then seeing His goodness with a pen, with the shutter, with a word of thanks, these really are the most sacred acts conceivable." (pg. 61) So, writing down or taking pictures of what you are thankful for is a sacred act and actually "the most sacred act conceivable"?
"Here is the only place I can love Him." (pg. 70) She can only love God when she writes her list?
"...discover how to make love to God." (pg. 201) When you use certain words and phrases, you think certain things (sex, not necessarily intimacy).

Perhaps these questions I had were because I was not enjoying the poetry in it all. I do understand that a new voice, a break from ordinary is refreshing and her fan base is solid. Based on bloggers I read and Tweets I am following the majority are devouring One Thousand Gifts.

I did not enjoy One Thousand Gifts, but I do like Ann VosKamp. I read her blog, Holy Experience, at times and sometimes, I link up. From my readings, I believe she loves God with all her heart and desires to serve Him; so none of that is in question here. Plus, despite the fact that the reading was laborious to me, I did close the book desiring to keep writing my list of thanks and wanting to see God's hand in all of my life, which was the purpose and goal of the book to be sure. Thanks to Ann, I have a list going that started long before her book and because of her blog.

Theme is good; writing is horrible.

I read both good and bad reviews before getting this book thinking that all the good reviews definitely outweighed the bad. But after reading it, I suggest you heed the negative ones carefully, including this.

I've been a creative writer and editor for nearly 20 years and this book is a "headthrobber." I appreciate the theme and the whole passion for thanksgiving and living life fully for Christ, but the way it is written is agonizing. Too many adjectives clumped together, too many dangling clauses, too many useless words, and a trail of thought that has no structure... The whole gift is just lost on me by the time I get to the end of the paragraph. Rather than be blessed by the beauty of what it wishes to impart, I ended up annoyed and disturbed that I am reading a journal of sorts of a very messy mind. I couldn't finish a paragraph without heaving a sigh and rubbing my wrinkled forehead. I am surprised that so many people are rating this with 5 stars. I wish someone edited this in a way that would have preserved the thought without sacrificing style, but with a clear trail of thought, well-structured paragraphs, beautifully constructed sentences, and wise use of adjectives.

I feel the author tried too hard to translate a painting into words, making this book a canvass of her own abstractions. It felt as if she had a thesaurus beside her and used every polysyllabic word without hesitation. It seemed like she had many resources (especially on constellations and the cosmos) and just wanted to pour everything she knows in one book. What a mess.

I am NOT recommending this to any one at all.

Good general introduction with a VMware slant, light on recent innovations, better for the classroom than for pros

This title is an introduction to the fundamentals of virtualization, the technology whereby multiple virtual PCs or servers run on a single physical PC or server. Virtualization is incredibly useful at every level, from individuals running virtual machines on the desktop for test and development, to enterprises running thousands of virtual machines in a datacenter, with the flexibility to create, remove, copy, scale up or downsize servers at will.

The author, Matt Portnoy, is an industry veteran who according to the blurb is a staff systems engineer at VMware as well as a teacher in the fields of virtualization and database technology.

In 14 chapters Portnoy covers what virtualization is, what a virtual machine is, and the essentials of managing CPUs, memory, storage and networking in a virtual environment. There is also a look at creating high availability virtual machines, and a brief look at deploying applications.

There are some hands-on examples covering creating VMs with either VMware Workstation Player or Oracle VirtualBox.

Now, a few observations. This is a well-written book with a ton of useful background on the topic. I can see it working well as a textbook for a course and maybe that is what it is designed for. It would also be useful for a computing professional up to a point, but I do wonder whether a pro would be better off with a book dedicated to a particular virtualization technology rather than one that does its best to be generic, though with a strong VMware slant (which is not surprising given the author’s background).

Personally I would like to have seen more coverage of Microsoft’s Hyper-V, given that it is now built into every version of Windows including Windows 10 (though not the Home edition), but although there are a few mentions of Hyper-V here, all the examples are VMware or Virtual Box.

Still, that just highlights the issue: if you are working with VMWare you won’t need the Hyper-V stuff and vice versa.

This is the second edition of a book first published in May 2012. I don’t have the earlier edition, but the chapter titles are all the same. A lot has happened in those four years, in particular the explosion of cloud computing and containerization, and I would like to have seen more coverage of these topics. Containers are mentioned but only briefly; I think the subject would merit a dedicated chapter.

Despite the above, this is a good choice if you want to learn about virtualization at a conceptual level. If you are looking for a practical guide you might be better served by a title specific to the virtualization technology you want to use.

a broader context for the Romantic era

Connell takes us back to the Romantic Age, with an analysis of the key figures of that era. The emphasis in his book is on writers such as Shelley and Wordsworth. But he places them and their works squarely in the context of the political and social movements then occurring.

Thus we see descriptions of parliamentary struggles. And of the economic thoughts of Malthus, Ricardo and Smith. The musings of early industrial capitalism. Perhaps, the book seems to suggest, some of the literary figures can be understood in part as being influenced by those other ideas, and reacting to them.

Connell's synthesis is interesting, because many histories of this era might study the economists and politicians totally separately from the literary writers.

In Medieval Technology and Social Change, Lynn White considers the effects of technological innovation on the societies of medieval Europe: the slow collapse of feudalism with the development of machines and tools that introduced factories in place of cottage industries, and the development of the manorial system with the introduction of new kinds of plows and new methods of crop rotation. One invention of particular import, writes White, was the stirrup, which in turn introduced heavy, long-range cavalry to the medieval battlefield. The development thus escalated small-scale conflict to "shock combat." Cannons and flamethrowers followed, as did more peaceful inventions, such as watermills and reapers.

A great work that connects technological and social history

This is one of the classic works of medieval studies to emerge out of the past half century, and its importance far outstrips whether or not White's famous stirrup thesis is correct or not. The overwhelming consensus is that it is incorrect. But only someone who has not read the book could imagine that that thesis was the bulk of the book, or the only idea in it. In fact, there is an unstated, larger thesis that underlies White's book, and which indicates why it is important: White implies that we can only understand the medieval period if we also understand its technology. White virtually ushered in the age of the study of medieval technology and seeing it as intimately connected and underlying the social and even political history.
This is a short book, shorter than it initially seems upon holding it because of the vast number of foot and endnotes. But the number of ideas and insights are completely out of proportion with the book's apparent brevity. It is absolutely stuffed to overflowing with content. Miraculously, that doesn't effect its readability. Even a relative neophyte to historical studies will have little difficulty following White's ideas and arguments, although, obviously, the more one knows, the better the background one will have for understanding his theses.
Although his stirrup thesis has largely been rejected, this remains an essential book on any short list of the great works of medieval history. More than that, it is fun, too. I strongly recommend it to anyone with the slightest degree of interest in medieval history.

Jammed full of information

Although this book has been around for awhile, it represents a truly amazing source of information on the role which technology played in Medieval society. I thought that the first two parts of the book, dealing with changes in technologies of war and agriculture and their effect on Medieval society were by far the strongest part of the work. At times, I found the meticulous description of the archaelogy and etymology of various objects and words a bit much, but I was fascinated by the way in which White linked technological progress to the emergence of numerous aspects of Medieval life. I didn't enjoy the final section, on machinery, as much because it seemed to loose its focus on the social changes caused by the technology, although it did mention the new ethos that mechanical development fostered. I have done some more reading on the subject, and some critics have argued that White overstates the importance of the stirrup, but regardless about where the various historical controversies are today, this book provides a superb introduction to the field and would be a great resource to anyone doing research.

Relevant, not outdated

This book was part of the PhD curriculim at a top-tier university for Public Policy. The course was Science & Technology Policy I (a massive literature review before getting into our own research).
Whether or not the chain of events and relationships occurred precisely as White postulates is irrelevant.
The POINT is that small, technological change can have GIANT impacts upon life and social organization. This has been proven repeatedly by the researchers/students of complexity science (see Mitchell Waldrop, Murray Gell-Mann, Roger Lewin, John Holland, etc.)
By connecting medieval technological change (eg agrarian practices, stirrup, clock) to societal change (eg feudal system, settlement/town patterns), this book provides readers with a conceptual starting point to begin thinking about the impact of modern and future technologies.
In short, its a quick, VERY stimulating and interesting read. With the price at only 2 dollars, you can't go wrong!

Very loose retelling

I admit, I haven't read Barrie's original text. All I really know are the popularizations that have permeated every childhood for the last half-hundred years. So be it. Being a creature of my culture, I can surely say that this diverges from that culture (if not the original) in worthwhile ways.

This Peter Pan lives in a Dickensian world, or worse. Peter is the priveleged one, spinning stories for his friends just below his rung on the social ladder. His rung, though, is the one where his mother threatens to kill him if he doesn't buy her brandy with his little body as coin, and his friends are worse off. It's dark imagery. They were dark times.

Peter finds his way to Wonderland, in the era before Cap'n Hook got hooked. It was also the era before the voluptuous sirens were coaxed into covering up their very mammalian bits. Some grownups want to see their childhood stomping grounds again, but not see them as children saw them. This works well for at least some of those readers, including me.
