This novel is about two protagonists who were born and raised during the Great Depression in a working class neighborhood in a large metropolitan city inhabited by Italian immigrants and their first-generation American children.

At an early age, these Americans recognized and understood they were bounded and yet isolated from the Anglo-middle class neighbors; they were considered different and not permitted to enroll in certain grade and high schools in their areas.

As they matured into their teens, they wondered if they could eventually compete outside of the environment they were born into. One of the protagonists insisted that only on the Avenue could they exist and survive, be safe and be happy and be respected. And there he lived and died.

The other protagonist risked moving out of the Avenue. He was willing to see if he could compete with those outside the Avenue and perhaps be assimilated in their environment, but vowing that if his venture was not successful, he could always return to the Avenue again.

And so they lived their respective lives, one in the area of the Avenue, the other never to live on the Avenue again.

About the Author

Andrew C. Cecere is a writer and retired attorney in Richmond, Indiana. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty district during the Depression years.

He was a Marine Corps officer during World War II, serving in the Southwest Pacific, Okinawa, and in North China following the Japanese surrender. Recalled to active duty in 1951, he served in the Pentagon as an attorney in the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Navy. After his discharge in 1953, with the rank of captain, he returned to private law practice in Richmond.

Cecere received his undergraduate education at George Washington University, Earlham College and Denison University and his doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Michigan Law School.

Danny Castleforte strives to escape the shame and limitations he feels for his Italian American neighborhood and becomes the successful Daniel Castle. But is he free or simply uprooted, as old passions and new perils constantly beckon him back to where he started. In reading this often heart-aching story, one recalls the famous last line in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby –- “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

Excellent read with in-depth characters, depicting the immigrant struggles fighting against the current in the 1920-45 era

This is a well-written period piece that depicts life in a segregated Italian steel working neighborhood in Pittsburg during the Depression and WWII years and then the resultant years. The book comes alive with a compelling story, vivid characters and a moral lesson. Two childhood friends come to a crossroad, one deciding to stay within the bounds of The Avenue and pursue a life that starts with running numbers that grows into a power position; the other seeks life on the outside with its challenges of bigotry, alternatively denying and tasting the fruits of the power his life-time friend offers to him. It is a story of the evils of selfishness and deception, mixed with hopeful relationships made difficult to sustain. This is especially cogent given the current prejudice issues. Author Cecere writes with the touch of an old master in what is his first novel, well past his 90th birthday!! An easy, but fascinating read

I really enjoyed reading this book - in fact I read the entire thing in one sitting. Bill Gates has led an amazing life and been at the core of the PC revolution. This book covers the basic details of Microsoft's success and Bill Gates' role in this. It also includes a few glimpses of his private life. Fascinating reading, which I recommend to anyone interested in one of the most sucessful men in the US, or interested in an overview of the history of DOS, Windows, and PCs.

The book seems to be aimed at the reading level of a teenager, and is not overly detailed. If you want a more thorough history of Microsoft you probably want to look elsewhere. However, this was an enjoyable book about Bill, and is a nice easy read for an adult.

Finally found what I needed

I absolutely LOVE this book! I read it in one afternoon. I took notes and typed up the affirmations that seemed to click to me and even emailed some to my husband to display on his desk at work. I cannot believe I have been so blind to something so simple for so many years. This book has given me hope and opened my eyes and heart to something quite phenominal. I told one of my daughters briefly about this book and she asked the title, when I told her the title, she said No, she does not want to read it. She does not believe in GOD or prayer, "it never works" she said. So I dropped it. I wish my parents would have shown this to me at her age, I could just imagine where I would be today if they did! Too bad i had blinders on my whole life. All I can say is I will not give up on my daughter(s) to read this book! If they can see their parents life change before their eyes, I am hopeful they will read this! I am on my second book by Catherine Ponder and believe me this will not be my last book of hers. She has a gift and I pray that i will come back here and write some of the remarkable things that have happened by implementing what she says. So if anyone is a non believer, I hope to change that by my actions.
Again, I cannot reiterate enough how simple this is!!!!! Read this Book, it will open your eyes & heart also!

My mother gave me this book over 30 years ago and I read it again recently and was reminded of things that I should be doing; I ordered a copy to give to my girlfriends daughter who is going through some challenging times and I know that this book will be of great help to her after reading it. Catherine Ponder's books are very good. You will never ever have any problems in life after reading this book and following the advice of Catherine Ponder.

Another brutal, gory and sexy comic book collection about crooks and the underworld.

Reminiscent of his run on Daredevil, Ed Brubaker brings us inter-related stories of drug barons, small-time crooks and the criminal world. A lot of sex, dead bodies, beatings and maimings ensue.

The artwork and story-writing are powerful and I’d recommend this to all lovers of crime stories.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips Continue to Amaze

I'm on a tear reading through Brubaker and Phillips' Criminal graphic novel series. I just finished volume three, The Dead and the Dying, which varies the regular format by presenting an anthology of three interrelated character study/stories. Brubaker is amazing in the way that he develops fully developed (and often sympathetic) characters in just a few pages. The Dead and the Dying is no exception as it gives us a boxer sucked into the world of crime, a war veteran who finds true brutality on the home front, and a woman who makes bad choices in men and life.
Highly recommended for gritty stories and tough-as-nails art.

About the Author

Agnes M. F. Wong, MD, PhD, FRCSC received her undergraduate degree from Boston University. She then obtained her MD degree from McGill University and completed her residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. After that, she completed a PhD in Neuroscience and clinical fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. This was followed by a combined research and clinical fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Wong is currently Associate Professor of Ophthalmology &Vision Science, Neurology, and Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Toronto.

a terrific book for the optometrist and ophthalmologist looking to increase their knowledge of eye movement disorders.

there currently exist many pediatric optometry and pediatric ophthalmology textbooks that look at strabismus, nystagmus and amblyopia. what makes this text stand out from all the others is a terrific means of its utilization of basic science to explain eye movement disorders. the chapter on nystagmus alone makes this book worth publishing. Dr. Wong looks at nystagmus in a clear concise way which proves invaluable for the scientist and the clinician alike. well worth your money if there exists any interest in eye movements and strabismus.

Ever feel like you are lost while reading Leigh & Zee? Wong explains eye movements like a teacher genuinely interested that you will understand using ample examples and revisiting the same concepts in a different way. I appreciate her, and I thank her for writing such a well explained manual.
