Essential for travel planning

Combines parts of the Lonely Planet guides for Russia (and I assume China and Mongolia) into a one-source book. Great focus on many different paths for a trans-Russia itinerary. If you are seriously considering making the trip, this is the book to buy!!

Summer guide only

A lot of stuff they write about is closed in winter and they just don't provide information at all about winter travel in some places making the guide frustrating sometimes.
They also don't always list the names of things in the native language (Russian, Mongolian, Chinese so when you are looking for something on a sign it is impossible to find or figure out.
It is nice that it is digital though so I can just have it on my phone and I did find some good restaurants (when open) using the guide just don't use it as your travel bible.
I got the trans-Siberian handbook by Bryn Thomas and Anna Kaminski and liked that they include native language names and the time difference from Moscow for every town (very helpful on the train). Although there winter info is a little off also.

WILLIAM H. PHILLIPS received his B.A. from Purdue University, his M.A. from Rutgers University, and his Ph.D. (in dramatic literature and film studies) from Indiana University. Informative, easy to grasp, introduction to film concepts

Phillips has written an accessible, up-to-date, and lively book suitable for anyone who wants a basic understanding of the art of film. It is arranged so that a discussion of film techniques is first, liberally illustrated with shots from numerous films (including newer releases). One of the nice features of the book is it identifies and points out the differences between publicity stills and frame enlargments. The rest of the book discusses how movies are developed, their sources, genres, and characteristics. There is a detailed chapter on alternatives to live-action films (especially focused on animation). The book's final section addresses the social meanings of films, and provides a sample analysis of Altman's "The Player." Throughout the text are sample student papers, to demonstrate how to write about film in a critical way. In the introductory film appreciation class that I teach, students preferred this book to Bordwell and Thompson's "Film Art." For them, all the examples and photographs enhanced the concepts, while the marginal definitions helped them remember key terms. Students also appreciated the inclusion of recent movies they have seen, as well as classics like "Citizen Kane." From this college professor's point of view, the book is best for beginners, who just want to know more about film techniques and analysis. However, even advanced students would find it a useful summary of film concepts.

Finally--a Relevant Film Book!

Recent films are discussed in the 3rd Edition as well as other editions with clarity and insight. Also, it is a rare film book that discusses the economics of film making and marketing of film in theaters and video formatting.

This work shows that other countries than the US also have an important cinematic history. This book encompasses both the American scene and the world historical perspective with its extensive chronology 1895-2003, and the relationship and mirroring of world events in film. This is a book to add to any collection of film reference guides. It is prime value for the money with 669 pages of prolific color plates and black and white photos of actual film shots.

A good book for people who don't know anything about films

I bought this book for an Introduction to Film class, and I think the book is very well thought out. The book goes into details about different aspects of the film making process, and lists important words in bold. Furthermore, there is a summary at the end of each chapter so you can review without rereading the entire chapter again. The book does mention a few movies when giving examples of different terms or techniques, but does a good job explaining what is going on in the movie before it gives the examples. Other film books just assume that you have seen all the movies that they are talking about, so they don't introduce them, while this one does a good job of that.

I often rate how much I enjoy a book by how emotionally involved I was with the 2 main characters. I was dazzled by this author's story about a Duke who is determined to woo his Duchess even if she fights him at every opportunity! This fresh story was a fun and moving book that readers will love.

Charlotte, Duchess of Rutherford was young and na�ve when she was seduced by her husband, Phillip who used his young and beautiful innocent bride in a cold game of revenge against her beloved brother. Charlotte had fallen in love with the man she thought was Phillip. But she that was before he callously left her after their wedding night and scorned her love. Broken hearted but audacious, Charlotte is a strong woman and soon vows to free herself and get her own revenge. She creates scandal after outrageous scandal hoping the unfeeling and dutiful Duke will divorce her and finally let her go.

It is years later and Phillip has come to the appalling realization that he loves his wife. But he knows Charlotte hates him. He longs for her company and is no longer willing to let her escapades go unnoticed. Desperate and starving for her attention, he kidnaps her in public and makes her an shocking proposition. If she will help him find another wife and teach him how to be a good husband, he will grant her a divorce. Phillip plays a deadly gamble and one he is determined to win but his wife isn't about to lose and she will not let Phillip break her heart again.

I loved this story. At first I wondered if I would like Philip. His past behaviors were reprehensible. But as the author reveals Phillip's desperate love for Charlotte and his sheer ruthlessness as he pursues her, you can't help but admire his tenacity and understand why Charlotte cared about him in the past. And slowly I, too, began to care for him. The author also eloquently explains Phillip's cold upbringing and what formed his character. He was raised to be a proper Duke by his unfeeling grandfather who coldly and brutally shaped him into a carbon copy of himself. Philip begins to realize he doesn't want to be his grandfather. He wants love and laughter with Charlotte even if that means changing himself. His metamorphosis was enthralling to read. Another thing that makes this book so deliciously wonderful is the feisty and endearing heroine. She doesn't make life easy for Philip and I adored her fighting spirit as she often out smarts him but also makes him see what is really important in life. Charlotte has such a caring heart and I wanted her to guard her heart from Phillip but as Charlotte learned to love Philip, I couldn't help but care for him too!

This was a sensational read! I became so emotionally involved in the 2 main characters. They were perfect for each other and I will definitely be reading any future books by this fabulously talented new author!! If you are looking for an absorbing story about 2 characters that you really can care about and their adventures along the way, then you will adore this book as much as I did.

Philip Burgess, the Duke of Rutherford has been pining for and trying seduce his wife for the past six months. Having been married three years to Charlotte, you would think he wouldn't have to win back the woman he married. But, Philip didn't marry for love, he married for revenge. After Charlotte's brother stole away Philip's fianc�, all Philip could think about was getting revenge and so he seduced and married Charlotte, only to consummate their marriage that night, and walk away from her the next day. Having a harsh upbringing, training for the dukedom early, Philip has a colder, harder edge to him.

But Philip's feelings for Charlotte run much deeper than his plan of revenge. He has known her for many years, and has now come to the realization that he truly loves her. He knows he acted despicable three years ago, and will do anything to make it up to her. The problem is actually catching up with her to proceed with his new plan.

Charlotte, hurt and angry over Philip's actions has taken to courting and flirting with any man in the ton she can get her hands on knowing scandals horrify the proper Duke. Determined for the past three years to put her flirting into Philip's face so he will grant her a divorce. Philip finds her, bounds and and drags her off to his house in hopes of seduction, but he soon learns Charlotte still carries around hatred for him. He comes up with a plan to win her back. He promises her a divorce in three months if she teaches him to become a better husband so he can woo their mutual friend Joanna. Charlotte knows this is a farce, and Philip secretly has no plans of divorcing her, but they each refuse to give an inch to the other, so they carry forward with their silly plan.

Seducing the Duchess is the debut book by author Ashley March and I'm impressed. This book has a lighter tone, with constant banter between the hero and heroine, yet still has a high level of sexual tension and a dramatic conclusion.

I like historicals where the hero and heroine are forced to marry early on in the book, or in this case where they are married when the book starts. Charlotte is just a pistol. She curses up a storm - and we are talking full out curses with rude hand gestures. She will do anything to get under Philip's skin to get a rise out of him. And he gives it right back to her.

Charlotte married Philip in good faith, not knowing he was doing it just for revenge. So Philip has much ground to make up before Charlotte can trust him again. I think Ashley March does a nice job with the trust issue. Charlotte doesn't give in easily and I like that she makes Philip work for it. Of course, deep down, Philip has always loved Charlotte, and getting his point of view, you can't help but root for him too. He is a very roguish, charming, sexy hero and their romance becomes very hot indeed.

My one complaint is with Charlotte during their separation. **Spoiler warning** During their three years separated, Philip admits to having a mistress and he assumes the rumors about Charlotte and all her lovers are true. But we come to find out that she didn't really have lovers. She flirted, but never took any to bed. I was disappointed - not because I wanted a more slutty Charlotte, but it would have been a chance to have a different kind of heroine in a historical. A heroine that is not virginal! Instead, the hero of course has been sleeping with other women, but the heroine has been the faithful one. We have been there, done that. **End Spoiler**

Seducing the Duchess had me giggling and falling in love with these characters. I definitely welcome Ashley March into the historical romance world and await more from her.

Ever wonder about that couple in historical romance books where they seem to have married for convenience, the man off to see his mistress all the time, and the woman acting the harlot? This book gives you a look at one of those non-main character couples. And wow, was it awesome!

Philip Burgess, Duke of Rutherford, wed his wife, Charlotte, simply for revenge against his once best friend--her brother--for stealing his fianc�e. Though he tried to act the part of not falling for Charlotte, it is clear that he did and a few years into their marriage, he decides that he is ready to love her the way she should be loved, the way he can love her. Only problem is, she is hurt from his betrayal, the fact that he acted as though he loved her, then told her it was all for revenge, so she acts the harlot, out late nights at clubs adorned in very revealing dresses, sitting on the laps of other higher class men. So, with this problem, Philip does the only thing that he thinks will make a difference; he kidnaps her, in front of a whole room full of men and takes her to his estate out in the country.

At the estate, it becomes a battle as very soon, both characters realize that they still do love each other, but there were just major obstacles to overcome in the way. The entrance of a key character, Philip's ex-fianc�e adds some spice to the story with some acting shows with Philip in front of Charlotte. Finally, Philip gives up on the games and decides that Charlotte means too much to him. All the while, he had made a proposition to Charlotte to grant her a divorce if she lets him try to woo her for the duration of three months. In the end, Philip has to make a choice to set his love free if she is to love him back.

The descriptions of the countryside, a harvest festival, and the manor that are in the story were my favorite. They were so vivid and I could picture them exactly as they were written. The romance in this story is awesome. Most wouldn't be interested in a story that involves forgiveness, but the romance in this story was very interesting to me in the fact that the hero and heroine were already together at the start of the book. It was such a different take on a romance and I felt like I was there with the characters trying to whisper in their ears to just get over themselves and be together! The author did a wonderful job of conveying each character's emotions, because I felt them as I read them as well.

The situations in this book were extremely believable given the time period that this book is written in. It was very interesting to read the story of `that' couple from other historical romance books. I would always wonder how those other characters would fare and how their lives were led. Fortunately, this story seemed to turn out way better than any of those than I would imagine. It ended up being a wonderful and beautiful love story of falling in love again, forgiveness, and what love can repair in any relationship.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a great historical romance read full of wit and funny situations, but also those that like a good romantic read. I will definitely be anxiously awaiting anything that Ashley March turns out in the future.

Boteach's newest book reads like a film that stretches two hours but could have been wrapped up in 30 minutes. All fear, he posits, is a "toxic emotion" rooted in the "fear that you don't matter." In Part I, "The Case Against Fear," he draws on innumerable anecdotes from his work as a rabbi and counselor, but his generalizations are backed by little proof. ("No woman ever fears breast cancer," he writes. "Rather she fears her inability to deal with it.") To help readers eradicate fear from their lives, he presents 32 practical strategies in Part II that include dedicating your life to something higher, becoming a leader, "killing" your television, reconnecting with family, doing good, raising fearless children and building community. Each chapter begins with a biblical citation, but it is only in Part II that Boteach draws out that religious content. Boteach's approach veers from personal friend to questioning therapist to exhortative observer of American life, with an occasional shot of humor. The book's value lies in his insistence that fear is something entirely within readers' control, a choice that he correctly calls "immensely liberating."

This is REAL!

The chapter that made the biggest impact on me in "Face Your Fear" as I read it was "What Stuff Are We Made Of." It especially gave me an uncanny feeling when Rabbi Boteach talked about how women sometimes fall into the trap of cheap and unsatisfying relationships (which usually culminate painfully for them) because they find themselves in dire need for male attention - even from men who would rather sleep with them than create a caring relationship.

The night before I read this chapter I spoke to a friend in an Ivy League college in Boston who is trying his best to "get it on" with a girl (in his words - "any girl"). He told me that he hit rock bottom dating someone who didn't want to go "to the next step" that quickly fearing that she would get hurt again after he would use her up, to put it bluntly. I felt that the chapter perfectly mirrored this girl's situation. Rabbi Boteach explains how these women lacked a loving father in their lives and therefore wanted to compensate that with a base and uncaring boyfriend. While the fact that this girl having had her father walk out on her when she was only seven years old and she never saw him again, tugged an inner emotional chord in me that still shakes.

But, in terms of broader substance, I have to thank Rabbi Boteach for teaching me that fear is something not to be proud of, but be cautious about. In fact, be deliberately aggressive to eradicate it completely. Alarmingly, it encompasses practically everything I do, from taking exams in school to interacting with people, and I never even knew that these edgy feelings are called fears. They constantly try to undermine my hard-pressed efforts and abilities to reach my potential. Instead of facing them with genuine and unswerving resolve, I tend to cop out.

The first part of the book called "The Case Against Fear" categorically pinned down for me the different kinds of fears that are found not just in an individual ("me") but in a collective group or people ("us") dealing with a wide-range of existential forces that continually bombards us with fear symptoms, such as politics and corporate business. Rabbi Boteach even tackles the issue of our fear of death.

Undoubtedly the strongest dose of inspiration that I got from Rabbi Boteach is from what he calls "the mother of all fears", which is, "the fear of insignificance." He says that this huge worry that's invariably locked inside our minds governs our scariest and most unshakable fears.

In the second part of the book "To Conquer Fear" he tells us how to "overcome our fear" and especially the fear of us being utterly and despondently insignificance. He also debunks the various myths about the alleged positive side of fear. He says that basically we can't derive any good from fear because it's inherently bad as an element that's antithetical to love. Therefore we must strive to destroy our fears by imbibing the waters of love.

But what makes this work real is the candid and the down-to-earth prose. "The instructions for overcoming fear that you will find in this book do not consist of abstract concepts, appropriate only for meditation and inappropriate in the real world. This book is a spiritual book that seeks to identify the underlying causes of fear" (pg. 8). Meaning that its not a vacuum cleaner that one can just let it rip while sitting back and having all the fear miraculously sucked out from out of him or her. There has to be an active participation and will to make this transition work. But when the person finds his or her love and confidence, it's as strong as a fortress on top of a precipitating cliff defending the person against the many

fears.

It's a lifesaver. Mr. Shmuley Boteach has been given the gift of wisdom for him to impart these truthful observations about fear, for all of us. Fear is a basic emotional ingredient in our lives, and a useless one at that. He teaches us how to combat it. And combat it for good.

God led me to buy this book, just when I Needed it Most. It's honest and very readable. Mr. Shmuley, thank you!

An excellent book on fear

I bought this book after seeing Rabbi Shmuley on his television show, which I believe airs on The Learning Channel (TLC). He artfully helps mend families who are near the breaking point. His wisdom and talent are beyond the beyonds if you ask me.

The ideas in the book are enlightening/thought provoking. He mentions the idea that our greatest fear is the fear of being insignificant, which is something I had never thought about and feel is likely true.

I enjoy the way the author uses wonderfully profound and inspirational quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Major concepts within each chapter are highlighted in bold.

My only objection to this book is the frequent mention of political ideas/concepts. I found myself laughing a few times that the Rabbi was indeed without fear to include so many references to world politics/civics, etc. that it might be a distraction for some readers. Due to this little "flaw," my ideal rating for the book would be a "4.5"

However, do not let that detract you from buying this book. It seems to be written with a lot of wisdom, experience and love.
