Gets the Job Done

In reviewing this book, I'm reminded about the famous quote that democracy is the worst form of government except for every other one.

The task of taking a large, complex topic such as critical theory and presenting it in primer fashion makes it inevitable that there will be places where the more knowledgeable or experienced reader feels like the person undertaking that task is being reductive. And it would be easy enough to pick on the book's idiosyncrasies: the psychoanaltyic chapter is too narrowly Freudian, the deconstruction chapter has trouble explaining how the practice (explained fine) developed from the theory, the reader-response chapter neglects later responses to some initial criticisms of the theory.

But these are the sorts of complaints that will be levied by those who aren't the target audience, and to make them is to wish for a book that is both an introduction for undergraduates and a more thorough encyclopedia for scholars. The book isn't trying to be the latter.

As an introductory work, Texts and Contexts is actually pretty good. The prose is clear and avoids overloading students with too much jargon or too many technical terms too quickly. It is also one of the few primers I've run across that tries to address practice rather than just theory--that tries to show what a _______ critic does rather than just what _______ criticism is.

Another plus is that the bibliographies at the end of each chapter, while short, are very serviceable, and provide students with a list of key readings in each area of criticism that can help them get started at being more thorough in the area in which they are most interested in.

If there is one thing I seriously hate about the book it is that it is one of those "designed to be text"books that comes out in a new edition every other year. I've had every edition since the second, and the changes are pretty superficial. (As I right this, it's now in the fifth edition.) Unless absolutely required (say by a professor) to buy the latest edition, readers would be better served to get a used, older edition on Amazon--they are usually less than a quarter of the price of the new edition.

Favorite Intro Lit Textbook

A number of years back, Mortimer Adler, he of the Paedeia Program and the wonderful Great Books Series, probably the last publically successful canonical venture before we starting deconstructing the canon, wrote a bestseller which was at the time regarded as a classic: "How To Read a Book". Lynn has written the book that Adler was trying to write.

After years spent reading and teaching the humanities, I've learned that we don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about how we read. That conclusion, in simple, funky Americanese, is, in as many words, what, I think, Jacques Derrida was trying to say in a lot more. And if words are, in a sense, metaphors, it's that much more imperative that we get a handle on our method of reading, that we become mindful of our processes of comprehension. Teaching mindful comprehension, a method of reading that sticks, is the main task of college level pedagogy in the humanities.

Lynn's book is a masterpiece of organization and concision. He begins by briefly describing the seven + basic approaches to reading which, in contemporary academic parlance, go under the rubric of critical theory, and then proceeds to devote a chapter to each, examining, in simple, clear, and accessible terms and demonstrations, what value the particular approach under discussion has for understanding the text.

Lynn's writing is lucid, accessible, exemplary. His citations are edifying, central. His examples are, well . . . textbook. The book as a whole is remarkably comprehensive in a svelte, easy-to-hand, state-of-the-art format. I challenge Freshman English or Language Arts instructors to find better than what we have here.

A great introductory text for AP English

I use this book to introduce literary theory to my AP high school seniors. The explanations of the theories are accessible, the sample essays provide great models, and the suggested strategies for critical writing effectively allow my students to engage with both work and theory. Impressive... AND the author maintains a sense of humor which adds to the readability. Wow!

Splendid book.

This is a book about the C# language and its uses rather than a game development book. And it's a bloody good one. I start making this statement in order to avoid confusion, as at the end of the day, it's called "Player's guide".

The reason why, is because it sort of points you in the right direction about the uses of the different functions and resources of the language when it comes to writing games. But then again, what this book will provide you is a solid understanding of the C# language, not only the basics, but pretty much everything you need to write thorough, elegant code as you make your first games.

About the author, RB Whitaker is the author of an acclaimed series of free XNA tutorials, that I personally consider one of the most well thought out I've found on the internet. I've used them a lot, and at first I bought the book partially by curiosity, partially by grattitude for his tremendous work in instructing people on the use of XNA and C# as a game development tool.

I couldn't regret it less. To be entirely honest, and after reading it from cover to cover, I have to say it's the best "condensed" and "readable" C# book I have in my programming library. I sometimes even use it instead of "Pro C# 5.0 and the .Net 4.5 Framework", to make some consultations.

Again, congratulations to the author, and I fully recommend this book to any beginner or intermediate level C# programmer. I'm sure you will get knowledge out of it.

THE book to learn C# programming!

I started XNA programming a few years back and found RB's website and his tutorials over a year ago. He has some of the best C# and XNA free tutorials out there. I would recommend checking them out.

When I heard he was writing a book, I was really excited because his tutorials are great. I was surprised, the book was even better than I expected.

Before getting into the book, let me describe my background with C#. I've been programming longer than I care to remember in C++, Assembler, VB, and even doing some light professional programming in C#. So, I'm not exactly new to C# or programming. Still, I never actually learned C#. I had been doing VB for years and switched over to VB.Net when it came out. Between that and knowing C++, I woke up one morning and realized that I already knew C# and just started programming. Because of that, there have been some gaps in my C# knowledge.

I actually wanted to be the first one to review this book because I was so excited about it. I immediately bought it and started reading. This book is less "dry" reading than most programming books, but its still a programming book. It had been so long since I had sat down and read a programming book cover to cover that I had forgotten how much work it can be trying to read a technical tome. But again, I would say this book was as easy as any other programming book I've ever read to get through.

I made it about 2/3rds of the way through the book, even learning a few things in spite of having been programming in C# for a few years semi-professionally. And then Microsoft abandoned XNA and I pretty much lost all interest in C# and Microsoft in general. It was actually Microsoft's decision on XNA that was mostly responsible for me never completely finishing the book and ultimately not writing the review.

But anyway, it was such a good book that I decided I should go ahead and write the review based on reading about 2/3rds of the way through it, as someone who knew C# fairly well before reading the book. That makes it a little difficult for me to take the perspective of an absolute beginner, but it appears to me that this book would be perfect for beginners as well.

Basically, this is by far the best C# book I've read. It doesn't cover XNA at all, but if you wanted to do XNA (even though Microsoft no longer supports it) through Mono or something, I would strongly recommend reading this book first. The book is written in an understandable way so that even an absolute beginner can start with this book. And yet at the same time, it takes you through the intermediate level of C# programming all the way to the door of advanced C# programming (to go much further than this book takes you, you would have to get into the internals of Windows or Assembly language or something along those lines).

Even though the title suggests a game, this book is not about game programming (or any specific type of programming); its about learning C#. And it does not disappoint. I would recommend it for anyone from a teenager wanting to start learning programming on their own, to IT professionals that think they might have a few gaps in their knowledge. It pretty much covers everything.

And RB has a gift for teaching. He's able to take advanced concepts and make them accessible to anyone. I think that's probably the reason to buy this book over any other C# book on the market. I own a few C# books, and this one is certainly my favorite.

So, to sum it up. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn, or get better at C# programming.

Great Book for beginers

I bought The C# 2010 for Dummies Book a few years ago. After 2 chapters, I was lost and gave up. I tried to pick up C# again, however, I bought this book instead. I am very pleased with how the author explained each topic. The author progresses the book at a very good pace, building on top of what you just learned. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out programming, anyone going to C# from another language, or any seasoned C# vet to use as a reference.

A very useful and deep source of knowledge regarding OpenCV application to develop mobile apps.

This book is aimed to both mobile app developers who want to improve the graphic functionality to a new level (3d gaming, augmented reality, etc) or to opengl desktop developers who want to extent his projects/products to mobile platforms. Both would benefit from all the know-how inside this book, that goes deep into not only the OpenCV framework fundamentals but also into some math required for creating powerful 2d/3d code and behaviours. A warn for beginners, you should know at least some C/C++ basic coding and some algebra (arrays, matrix and so) to not get lost while reading this book. Otherwise the book is a very useful and deep source of knowledge regarding OpenCV application to develop mobile apps.

I had a chance to read "Mastering OpenCV Android Application Programming" recently on a request of Packt Publishing. I hope to help readers with this review. Let's go, I got my copy from Packt Publishing, where additional formats to download it are available. In my case, I preferred it in Kindle Edition, also they provide me the source code for each chapter to a better understanding of each topic.

This book is suitable for people who have at least basic knowledge in Android, OpenCV and Computer Vision, if you are new in Android maybe you should have to learn it before reading this book. Let's begin with the main review. The first chapters are about OpenCV basic concepts (brightness, contrast, color space, arithmetic and geometrical transforms) and how to set OpenCV in your Android project step by step. For every topic, they show the code, explanation and results.

Until chapter 5, the content was about main OpenCV functions with Android interactions, but here on-wards the interesting and useful projects are explained such as Image alignment and stitching with notable improvements. Moreover, a Machine Learning chapter explains how to use its potential for Android apps. A nice chapter explains the best practices for Android projects as well for debugging using logcat logs. Finally, an entire chapter dedicated for an Optical Character Recognition is detailed.

Afterwards, I found this book very useful and recommendable. Overall, this is a must-read book for Android programmers, and Computer Vision specialists.

Understanding Stewart

The life and times of Jon Stewart are more than the last fifteen years of helming The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as author Lisa Rogak writes. The unlikely rise of the short wise-cracking Jewish kid from Jersey rising to become one of the most influential, and comedic, voices of political commentary is a told expertly and without bias.

Given Stewart’s impact the last fifteen years, Rogak could have easily just given a brief synopsis of his life prior to January 1999 instead she spent the a third of the book detailing Stewart’s childhood, collegiate years, and life before and after deciding to go into comedy. Rogak gives the reader as glimpse to Stewart as a young man that will affect how he helmed The Daily Show, including the triumphs and the many failures that he experienced throughout the 1980s and 90s.

Once Rogak gets to Stewart’s tenure on The Daily Show, instead of just detailing the next decade and a half, she shows how Stewart made the show more in his style and how he was hands on than previous host Craig Kilborn. Throughout the last two-thirds of the book, Rogak tackles The Daily Show years not strictly chronologically but as a mixture of chronology and themes. This approached allowed Rogak to give the reader a fuller understand of Stewart and The Daily Show as a whole.

Rogak was very evenhanded in her approach to the overall view of Stewart, mixing praise and criticism from critics and how the viewing audience has seen Stewart. Triumphs and embarrassments are told in their detail as well has controversies surrounding the show from his interview style, to the lack of female writers, and his liberal bias. And as Stewart seems on the verge of a major shakeup in his professional life, Rogak writes about his possible transition to films as director not actor.

Given Jon Stewart’s continued presence within media, Lisa Rogak did an wonderful job in writing about his life and career. Although it is hard for an author not to have some bias for their subject, Rogak is able to give a balanced portrayal of Stewart in her book from accomplishments to stumbles. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the host of The Daily Show.

More Boredom than Entertainment

The beginning of this biography of Jon Stewart felt like it was a high school writing assignment. Facts, no heart, fairly boring. No, not fairly boring; really boring. It stayed that way for far too long. It became more interesting once Jon Stewart became host of The Daily Show. At that point, there was more about the person, his personality, his interactions with people, some anecdotes sprinkled in.

I knew very little of Mr. Stewart although I usually enjoy The Daily Show. I still feel like I don't know very much. He can be contradictory, he can be stubborn, he has a temper. He has a soft spot in his heart for pit bulls, and he has three rescued dogs, my favorite factoid. He is a devoted husband and father. He is 5'7". Yes, there is more than that, but it all felt fairly superficial.

I listened to an unabridged audio version narrated by Cassandra Campbell, and her reading did not add to the story. It did, for me, detract.

Although now I know a little more about Mr. Stewart, this biography was ultimately unsatisfying.

Informative, but sometimes dry, read about America's most important political satirist today.

Jon Stewart may be easily dismissed by older Americans for his "fake news show" The Daily Show, but among younger Americans, his influence is unmatched. One statistic from Angry Optimist makes that clear: "According to Advertising Age, the median age of the average Daily Show viewer for the third quarter of 2004 was 35.7; in comparison, the median age for news shows on the three major networks was a whopping 60-plus. The age of the average O'Reilly viewer was pegged at 58" (p. 160). Stewart is clearly filling a need and a niche for political satire among young Americans who prefer their news delivered with laughs. This is why understanding Stewart's background, how he developed his talent, and his worldview are key to gaining insight into this critical phenomenon in American political culture.

The strength of Angry Optimist lies largely in its early chapters, detailing Stewart's life as a middle class, Jewish-American who lived a comfortable lifestyle in an affluent suburb, but, like most minorities in the United States, was ridiculed and excluded. Whether it was a passing comment from a WASP classmate, or anti-Semitic barbs he endured on the field playing soccer in college, humor became Stewart's way of handling his detractors.

It was also how he dealt with the pain of his family's break up at age 10, when his father left his mother. The financial struggles Stewart, his mother, and brother endured as a result marked him deeply.

Further on, though, the book becomes paragraphs and paragraphs of quotes minus deeper insight into his character and motivations. While it presents the basic information required of a biography, along with some heartwarming anecdotes (e.g. how he proposed to his wife), Angry Optimist became a dry read along the way.

One additional plus of the book is understanding a day in the life of the Daily Show. In other words, how each episode is put together, which is surprisingly very much like a "real" newsroom.

Angry Optimist presents an informative view of one of America's most prominent political satirists today, someone who has, and will no doubt have, considerable influence on younger U.S. voters. While weak in presentation in some parts, it offers a detailed enough look at his past, present, and possible future.
