Bill "Jax" Jackson teaches us with this book how to tell the story of the bible (whole or in part) in queue at the grocery store, over half an hour at the coffee shop, in a sermon, or over several days giving lectures at seminars.

Big Picture

Bill Jackson accomplished what he set out to do--draw out the metanarrative of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. I would have liked to have seen this keyed more tightly to the kingdom of God. I believe that a distinction needs to be drawn between the messianic kingdom of God and the spiritual kingdom of God. I also believe that the distinction between the millenium and the new heaven and new earth needs to be more sharply focused. About the Author
Dr. Michael K. Lindell is Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, Texas A&M University; Senior Scholar, Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center, Texas A&M University; Adjunct Professor, Department of Psychology, Texas A&M University

Dr. Lindell has over 30 years of experience in the field of emergency management, during which time he has conducted a long term program of research on the processes by which individuals and organizations respond to natural and technological hazards. Much of his research, especially that supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has examined the processes by which affected populations respond to warnings of the imminent threat of a hazard. This research has been conducted in communities affected by hazards as diverse as flooding, volcanic eruption, hazardous materials, and hurricanes. Professor Lindell also has had extensive experience in providing technical assistance to government agencies, industry groups and private corporations in developing emergency plans and procedures. He has served six times as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency in developing planning guidance for response to nuclear and radiological incidents, has made three presentations in National Academy of Sciences panels, and is currently a member of two National Academy of Sciences panels - Disasters Research in Social Sciences and Assessing Vulnerabilities Related to the Nation's Chemical Infrastructure. Professor Lindell has written extensively on emergency management and is the author of 70 technical reports, 70 journal articles and book chapters, and six books/monographs.

Great textbook!

This was a great introduction to emergency management! I was assigned this book for one of my Master's courses, and I was thoroughly impressed with it (unlike some of the other required readings). This book really does a great job of breaking down the important concepts of Emergency Management.

As a student, one of the most beneficial chapters was Chapter 14 - Professional Accountability. The information in that chapter such as Certification Programs in EM and Academic Programs in EM were, and will continue to be, great resources for me as I embark on a career in Homeland Security and Emergency Management...and I would say that this information would be beneficial for others, as well!

decent book, used in less than interesting class, was required reading

This was a required reading for an emergency management class I was taking for school (to be a teacher). The class was fairly difficult and not as interesting as I expected, thus I gave the book a 4 stars because it was a lot of detail and we didn't use a lot of it.

About the Author
"Dotti C. James, PhD, RN" is an Associate Professor at Saint Louis University School of Nursing. She traveled as part of a team to the Henrietta Szold Hadassah Hebrew University School of Nursing and the Hadassah Medical Centers in Israel to learn about preparing health care providers to manage mass casualty events. She has spoken at area colleges, hospitals, skilled-care facilities, and professional and first responder organizations about various aspects of preparing for and responding to terrorism. She is currently a faculty member in the Disaster Preparedness Online Certificate Program for Nurses, covering topics such as organization of the disaster response, management of casualties, and considerations for vulnerable populations. Dr. James coordinates the online and onsite Perinatal Nursing Graduate Specialty. Her research interests include developing an evidence base for intrapartal nursing interventions, the effectiveness of educational strategies and techniques, and nursing attitudes and awareness about victims of violence. She has received awards for Excellence in Classroom Teaching from Saint Louis University and the Emerson Electric Company. Dr. James has served in leadership roles in local, regional, and national professional organizations, and is a contributing author to three texts.

"Joanne C. Langan, PhD, RN" is an Assistant Professor at Saint Louis University School of Nursing. She received a BS in Education from Quincy University and a BSN from the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Langan earned MSN and PhD degrees in Nursing Administration and a Nursing Education Certificate from George Mason University. While a faculty member at GMU, she was theCo-Project Director for the Washington Regional Academic and Community Consortium and the Project Director of the Partnerships for Quality Education. At Saint Louis University, Dr. Langan is the coordinator of the traditional students' Public Health Nursing course. Research and areas of interest include Faculty Practice and nursing student learning, the Nursing Shortage, Community Partnerships in Graduate Medical and Nursing Education, and Disaster Preparedness. She is a contributing author for two Community-Based Nursing Practice books. She was a member of a team who received intensive education at the Henrietta Szold Hadassah Hebrew University School of Nursing and the Hadassah Medical Centers in Israel and is developing modules and curriculum as a faculty member of a Bioterrorism/Disaster Preparedness Certificate Program. Dr. Langan is a consultant/member of the Emergency Preparedness Team at St. Joseph Hospital of Kirkwood.

I bought this book in December of 2013, with all its defects and resold it to you guys just the way I got it in December and it was returned to me. I feel like I was duped and cheated and that is not fair. You people need to actually take pictures of books you sell to others and not make them suffer due to your greed and negligence. This SUCKS!!

VERY Well-Written Book!

I bought this book for one of my piano students who wanted to work on chords and theory. This book is extremely well-written and lays out the basics of music theory in an easy to understand method. My student and I are slowly working through the book and I am excited to have such a well written and concise approach to understanding jazz music.

He works for Seoul-based publishing company Seoul Selection, where, among other things, he serves as editor-in-chief of the monthly travel magazine SEOUL. In addition to SEOUL SELECTION GUIDES: KOREA, he authored SEOUL SELECTION GUIDES: SEOUL and co-authored the walking tour guide SEOUL'S HISTORIC WALKS. Robert currently lives in Seoul's Itaewon neighborhood with his wife Solongo. When he's not writing or blogging, he can often be found traveling about the Korean countryside, photographing historic architecture.

Excellent, helpful, and well worth it

They've done it again. As a follow-up to the excellent 'Seoul' from 2011, Robert and the Seoul Selection team have produced another winner in 'Korea'.

If you've read 'Seoul', the only major difference is the scope. Covering the country better than Lonely Planet and hitting almost as many of the off-the-beaten-path places as the Moon guidebook, the compelling case to travel Korea is made over the volume's 750-odd pages.

Instead of simply copying-and-pasting the Seoul section from his previous book, the author seemed fit to work his way through the city with a fresh spin. Robert's personal passions of architecture and historical sites are easy to see, and more than a few of the historical tales don't appear at the sites themselves.

The country is comprehensively covered, from the ruins of the Workers Party of Korea headquarters in the far north to the far-flung islands in the southern sea. The majority of places merit a paragraph or two explaining the story or history, but quite a few places are called out for an exceptional experience or moment in time. To be sure, not every possible place is covered or thoroughly mentioned, but a book that did that might not fit in your backpack!

The full-color pictures throughout the book are a strong highlight, as are the maps and directions. Korean hangeul is used throughout the book, and a six-page primer offers some basic survival phrases. Curiously, a hangeul chart is missing. If coming to Korea, there are plenty to be found on the Internet, perhaps printed and glued into the back of the book. See the Wikipedia page for a brief primer, or just print one out.

There's almost nothing bad to say about this book. On one level, it's a high-quality, well-printed book - this in contrast to guidebooks' propensity to use thin paper for their photo-light layouts. The book weighs a bit more as a result, and could conceivably double as a coffee-table style book if you were so inclined.

If coming to Korea or you're already here, there's no reason not to pick it up. If your edition of Lonely Planet, Moon, or Frommer's feels a little old, replace it with this one. The price is cheaper in Korea (as most Seoul Selection books are), and is well worth even the price in dollars.

Good book but author isn't critical enough about what's worth seeing.

I'm just back from my first trip to Korea and I used this as my primary guidebook.

The author is obviously very passionate about Korea, especially traditional Korean culture and history, and it shows. But in my opinion he's overly positive about everything and this makes it very difficult to determine which sights are worth seeing and which aren't on a limited schedule. Many of the sights he mentions will be of no interest to the average traveler unless you have a diehard interest in Korean history or a good deal of imagination. An artificial pond or a few rocks in a field that are apparently ancient ruins become a place to (quote) "happily spend the day with a bottle of makgeolli rice wine, watching the willow trees and contemplating the city's former greatness." An incense burner in a museum becomes something (quote) "you could stare at for hours and not feel the time pass." Every temple or park mentioned is one of the "most important" or "most beautiful" or "most idyllic" in Korea.

The author's interest in traditional Korea also causes the book to be somewhat lacking if you are interested in modern, high-tech Korea. For example, he completely omits mention of the area around Gangnam station in Seoul, which I found one of the more exciting parts of the city, rivaling the nightlife of Tokyo or Osaka and definitely worth seeing if you are more interested in modern Korea rather than visiting yet another temple or contemplating an incense burner for hours. Or the e-sports stadium on the top floor of the electronics mall in Yongsan where you can walk in on a professional Starcraft match - an experience you can only have in Korea, but also omitted in this book.

I would have appreciated more recommendations for Korean restaurants. His restaurant recommendations (in Seoul especially) tend towards foreigner bars or cafes serving Western food. It's not like I came all the way to Korea so I could socialize with foreigners and eat the same food as I could at home? Unlike in Japan where there are pictures and plastic models of food all over the place it's more difficult to find good places to eat Korean food in Korea if you don't know the language well.

The town maps included are mostly useless, giving a poor sense of scale and distance, which is a problem because the tourist maps you often get in Korean towns are also cartoony, useless and not to scale. The transportation info is often somewhat lacking and usually oriented towards day-trippers from Seoul rather than someone traveling through the country.

The included Korean phrases, while helpful, lack useful ones like "can you please take my picture?"(which I really prefer saying rather than thrusting a camera at a stranger and grunting and making hand motions) or "two tickets for Busan please" or "can I leave my luggage here?" but strangely includes "please ring up the bill", which was always met with incomprehension whenever I used it in Korea because you generally just go and stand around at the cashier when you're ready to pay rather than the US style of a bill being brought to your table.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good book, with almost every tourist site in Korea of note included, with nice pictures and printed on good paper, but it's far from perfect. Probably best suited towards someone based in Seoul already familiar with Korea who is interested in making day trips to other parts of the country, rather than someone traveling there for the first time.

This is the S.Korea guidebook to have

I have only had this book in my possession for a few weeks, but during this time I've hosted a few guests and found this to be an invaluable resource for first-time visitors. Indeed, this guidebook offers a comprehensive picture of all there is of cultural and historical significance (including elsewhere overlooked sites and regions) outside of and manageable as a day trip away from the major cities to see. Moreover, I think other readers, who perhaps like me may not have hours to Web surf the English and Korean language blogs in order to put together travel itineraries will want to keep this worthwhile guide handy. I especially appreciate the way the book is organized by geographic regions with easy to understand maps, includes tips that can range from the best time of day and even when in the year to visit, and contains suggestions for locally-favored eateries and beautiful scenic spots that fall well within a budget traveler's means. All in all, I think this is a great guidebook for both visitors and long-term residents.

Everyone has a book on prosperity nowadays. In this time of manic busyness, Robert's book is like a breath of fresh air. Do we really need to be so busy, or are we being too busy to notice what's really important and worth our attention - and what isn't? Are we going in a direction that we believe will lead to a better life if we just work enough, sacrifice and struggle enough, or could we be enjoying a more fulfilling and meaningful life now?

An average good book

Is this a good book? Yes. Is this a great book? No.

In a nutshell, this book is basically a self-help on self-discovery. The author talks a lot about vision and purpose in life, but he does not define them. He directs his clients toward self-discovery.

The best part of the book is in chapter 1, "The Manic Society." After that, every chapter seems to be the same. He just talks about the same topic from different angles using different terms. The book is like a two dimensional space, lacking the third dimension and therefore depth or much substance.

Review of the 'Kabbalah'

I read the 'Kabbalah' for the 1st time in the early '90's. I can still open it up, to this day, and learn something brand new.
Gershom Scholem was a professor of Jewish mysticism at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem until his death in 1982. Among his works are 'Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism', 'The Messianic Idea in Judaism', 'Origins of the Kabbalah', 'Kabbalah', 'On the Kabbalah and Its Symbolism', 'On the Mystical Shape of the Godhead', and 'Sabbatai Sevi: The Mystical Messiah'. Every book is a treasure in and of itself. Mr. Scholem put the Kabbalah back on the 20th century map. His studies on the 'Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Creation)', 'The Bahir (Bright)', and 'The Zohar (Splendor)' show the brillance of this unique individual.
The 'Kabbalah' is written in 3 parts. The 1st is the Kabbalah itself; from the beginings of mysticism up to modern times (including the disaster brought on by Sabbatai Sevi, that very nearly destroyed Judaism for 250 years afterwards). He also shows the Hasid's (the Ultra-Orthadox Jews) and how the Kabbalah and the Zohar influance their teachings and beliefs. He also shows why regular Orthadox Jews avoid the Kabbalah (calling it Jewish withcraft) and why they considear the Hasid's to be cultists of a sort (even though the Kabbalah WAS Orthadox Judaism for 300 years before the advent of Sabbatai Sevi - which Mr. Scholem painfully points out). He also shows the inept handling by the 'Christian Kabbalists' and occultists in general - neither group prepared to do the initial research that was needed. Both groups had different agendas and used the Kabbalah to further those particular goals.
The 2nd part is chocked full of enough goodies to make you swear off dieting for good. The Zohar, the Shabbatean movement, the Frankists, demonology, gemaria (bible codes that change what the Torah says to something else entirly [the book 'The Bible Code' is an excellent example] to eventualy write a '6th Book of Moses' written entirly out of codes is the Kabbalists eventual goal), how to make a Golem, Thrown (merkabah) mysticism, and much much more.
Lastly, it has the peaple and their histories that make this book such a delight to read. Azriel of Gerona, Moses Cordovero, Joseph Gikatilla, and many more. The 'Lion' and his 'Cubs' give their roar as well.
If you have to buy one book on the Kabbalah, then this is the book to get. You will not be sorry in the least.

Fantastic and Exhaustive Survey Of Kabbalistic Literature & History

Scholem originally intended much of the material in this book to be entries in an encyclopedia and anyone approaching this book without that knowledge may find it's organization confusing. However his detailed & scholarly (dare I say intellectual) analysis of Kabbalah's fascinating history and colorful characters is unparalleled. He digs deep into the similarities and contradictions between the different Kabbalistic traditions & teachers, citing an exhaustive list of references in the process. The research into this material is quite deep and I have yet to see another work which comes as close to an indepth analysis of Kabbalistic history & literature as this one does.
Having said that, this book is NOT for the layperson. And by layperson I mean anyone not familiar with Judaism and the basic religious/spiritual Hebrew vocabulary. Despite the fact that this wasn't originally intended as a "book" per se, the writing is awkward at times even within the major chapters as he jumps from concept to concept with little transition. In order to really get an idea as to the full exposition of any one topic it is necessary to go to the index and refer back page by page as he does not organize material concisely or summarize anything.
All in all, this is a MUST for anyone seriously interested in Kabbalah--I do pronounce that this book has probably and might continue to separate the wheat from the chaff as far as serious students of Hebrew mysticism & dabblers are concerned. Anyone who can read this book and understand it's contents has already put in a great deal of study into the topic and those who don't understand but get called into a further understanding through additional investigation can honestly call themselves students of Kabbalah if they so wish. Everyone else may only be armchair enthusiasts and that's OK too - this book is not for the dabbler but for the serious student.
