Casey Stella is a Principal Software Engineer focusing on Data Science at Hortonworks, which provides an open source Hadoop distribution. Casey’s primary responsibility is leading the analytics/data science team for the Apache Metron (Incubating) Project, an open source cybersecurity project. Prior to Hortonworks, Casey was an architect at Explorys, which was a medical informatics startup spun out of the Cleveland Clinic.� In the more distant past, Casey served as a developer at Oracle, Research Geophysicist at ION Geophysical and as a poor graduate student in Mathematics at Texas A&M.

Immigrant Kids - A Must Read!

This wonderful non-fiction book will be a hit with students at the 4th-6th grade level. The real life pictures of immigrant children in the neighborhoods of New York during the late 1800's and early 1900's that appear on almost every page of the book should hold the interest of even the most reluctant readers. However, while the reading itself is not too difficult for most 4th-6th grade students, much of the vocabulary explaining the era of that time will be unfamiliar to them so covering this book as a read-aloud may be most beneficial. Immigrant Kids provides a wonderful way to introduce students to immigration in the past and show how it has changed over time. It lends itself well to a discussion in history class on the various cultures that became part of the giant "mixing pot" we now call our country. Because this book is set in New York it can further be used to teach about the city of New York and its early beginnings. Possibly the one thing that will interest students the most about this book is that it is written from the perspective of children like themselves. Overall the historical content of this book is very well defined and accurate and the photograph driven text provides readers with a very non-threatening approach to information books. It is a must read in any 4th-6th grade history curriculum and can work as a wonderful addition to a reading curriculum when used in accompaniment with other books both fictional and factual dealing with the topic of immigration.

This book is an incredible description of life as an immgran

The life of an immigrant child was harsh. Russell Freedman accomplished his goal of showing how difficult an immigrant's life was through the use of descriptive words and photographs that make you thankful that you do not have to live like immigrant children of the past. The photographs captured our attention. Our fourth grade teacher shared this book with us. It helped us to learn about the conditions immigrants had to live under. We highly recommend this book!

This is a succinct introduction to the rapidly developing field of pragmatics - the study of language from the point of view of its users, of the choices they make, the constraints they encounter in using language in social interaction, and the effects their use of language has on other participants in communication.

The book reviews the work of Austin, Grice, Searle, Levinson and others, examining the implicit meaning of everyday conversation, as well as the social importance and determination of our individually performed 'pragmatic acts'.

In this updated and thoroughly revised edition, Mey extends the treatment of metapragmatic phenomena to what is often referred to, in the US anthropological-pragmatic tradition, by the term 'indexing'. He has also given full-fledged treatment to his theory of Pragmatic Acts (including 'embodiment'), and has included new chapters on literary pragmatics and pragmatics across cultures. The final chapter on social aspects of pragmatics covers extensive recent research in what has come to be named the 'critical' orientation of the discipline.

About the Author
Jacob L. Mey is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense Main Campus. In 1977 he founded, with Hartmut Haberland, the Journal of Pragmatics, of which he is the chief editor. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Zaragoza, Spain in 1992. His latest publications include The Concise Encyclopedia of Pragmatics (editor, 1998), and When Voices Clash: A Study in Literary Pragmatics (1999).

Really. It's that bad.

At first I thought Mr. Futter's review was surely a bit exaggerated -- but then I opened the book. It's every bit as bad as he says, and maybe even a bit worse. I realize this information isn't very helpful, since the only people who are going to read this book anyway are students who have been assigned it in a class and therefore have no choice but to read it -- but, if you have any say in the matter, I second Mr. Futter's advice: Flee from this book as you would a horde of bees.

For those who would choose to commit suicide by means of coma

Jacob L. Mey is surely one of the great thinkers of our time. With literature, I tend to hold to the adage: if I can't figure out what's going on, it must be literature. This man must be a giant. At every corner he seeks to surprise you with a bauble from his font of wisdom, further obfuscating whatever you had a meagre hope of reading. Although the bulk of this book can be condensed on a single sheet --and indeed, I think a revised addition should include it as an appendix-- the text is so difficult to comprehend, so hard to grasp, Sherlock Holmes himself would be at a loss. Trees have died over this! I would like to illusrtate my point with copious examples, but the thought of opening that book of my own volition shakes me to the very core. So, I leave you with the advice, flee from this book as you would a horde of bees. I, for one, am going to burn it in a ritualistic fashion once the rain lets up.

I ordered this book is for a class i am taking. I can't say it is particularly enjoyable but it gets the job done. It does repeat information quite often in chapters which can be slightly annoying, but the real reason I am dissatisfied is because of the time it took to be delivered!
I ordered the book on a Tuesday, choosing 3-5 business day delivery, assuming the counting started from the day it was ordered. I didnt end up getting the book for 10 business days, and fell behind in my class because of it. Advice: don't order online!

A living exemplar of why not to pronounce death before its time

Christos Yannaras' 1967 Greek text has been translated by Haralambos Ventis, edited and introduced by Andrew Louth, and published by T&T Clark International. Yes, the text is less than 150 pages and costs, page-for-page, as much as books twice and three times its page length. Go figure. Production costs in limited imprints can drain a wallet. That the book reached imprint brings credit to its publisher.

Readers are in for treats when appraising this text from the early years of Yannaras' scholarly publications, actually preceding his defense of dissertation at the Sorbonne by three years. Louth acknowledges "...Yannaras' sharp antipathy to the West, which many in the West will find exaggerated and unfair" (p.3). Without dulling Yannaras' critical edge, Louth explores three themes of Yannaras' opposition to: 1) "...amoralism and impersonalism of western consumerist capitalism; 2) distortions created by failing to distinguish the individual from the person and so-called personal knowing; and 3) tethering ideas from the Greek East to western epistemology.

The monograph is divided into seven chapters: 1) The Metaphysical Denial of God's Divinity; 2) The Historical Proclamation of the 'Death of God'; 3) Nihilism as a Presupposition of the Absence and Unknowability of God; 4) Apophasis as Denial and Abandonment; 5) The 'Nihilism' of Theological Apophaticism; 6) Apophatic Knowledge as Personal Participation; 7) Apophatic Knowledge as Communion. A 'Translator's Afterword' (4 pages) and comprehensive end-notes (17 pages) followed by a combined subject and name index (4 pages) bring the 136 type-set pages to an end.

The Afterword by translator Haralambos Ventis surpasses my expectations in two ways. First, Ventis advances a critical summary of ideas that Yannaras explores in text in succinct and incisive terms. Second, he explores and dismisses a novel parallel between how linguistic post-modernists (e.g. Derrida) revere the 'other' contra-scholasticism and Yannaras advances a contra-scholasticism argument, too. However, as Ventis rightly claims, Yannaras supports the 'other' from his view that all expressions about the 'other'--whether God or a human being--ought to obey the boundaries set by apophatic theology, which eschews "...all enclosure in fixed meanings" (p.112).

There is nothing dull or uninviting in debates addressed in this text by a prolific author. Readers will disagree with respect or simply wish that they had heard the author's perspective earlier. Few will dismiss a cultural and theological ethos that Yannaras explores in expository writing akin to debates between Palamas and Barlaam. Instead, they will discover a kindred mind to Heidegger, who risked ridicule over sweeping appraisals of western philosophy since Plato. Wisdom reaches wider than speculative science in this book and shakes scripted modes of thought.

An audience from philosophers, cultural critics, linguists, theologians, sociologists, historians, assorted empiricists and metaphysicians, particularly Kantians and post-Kantians, will find venues of their own for exploration in this book. For all these reasons I offer an enthusiastic recommendation.

excellent primer... but only a primer

I bought this (wickedly expensive) little book not the least because I'm determined to read "the best and the brightest" in Eastern Orthodox theology, but also because the subject matter -- our apophatic knowledge of God -- was highly pertinent to continuing a discussion I had/am having with a non-Christian acquaintance. Yannaras is certainly one of the best theologians in contemporary EOxy, and, as Andrew Louth explains in the introduction, this little book is a great survey for understanding nearly the whole of his (unfortunately largly untranslated from Greek) theological corpus.

Pros (+) of the book:

succinct and lucid;

not acridly polemical;

punctuated by exellent quotes from some unfortunately under-exposed thinkers in the West (i.e., Heidegger, Maximus, Denys the Areopagite), so that they can "speak for themselves"; a mature engagement, rather than dismissal, of postmodern theological philosophy a la Nietzsche and Heidegger;

at times beautiful insights into the erotic mystical intimacy of the soul with God, "the word beyond words";

good analogies, which Yannaras uses well to underline the extreme importance of the essence/energy distinction in EO/Palamite theology

Cons (-) of the book:

Yannaras's succinctness borders on insufficient analysis, particularly in his hasty analysis of scholasticism; as Louth's introduction points out, Yannaras betrays an unfortunate unfamiliarity with key western theolgians (e.g., Levinas, von Balthasar, Congar, Pieper, et al.) who can go just as far along the lines Yannaras traces yet without renouncing scholasticism as such like Yannaras does;

at times Yannaras's analogies prove too much (e.g., explaining our knowledge of God in in his energies as akin to knowing an artist in his works really does raise the specter of the unknown, hypertanscendent Platonic Deity that has haunted the Palamite debate for centuries -- for the fact of the matter is we only obliquely know an artist in his art, whereas to know God, biblically, is to know him "face to face" [as Adam knew Eve and as Hebrew "knowledge" always carries a sexual overtone]);

in other words, the analogies sometimes undercut the *erotic intimacy* of mystical faith and instead leave us with merely the so to speak love letters of God in his energies (and in turn in his actions)

All in all, this book is a superb contribution to theological dialogue, but which has been largely ignored (due to its age [1967] and original linguistic obscurity [Greek]). Though its been available for many years, it's good to see T&T Clark republish it for fresh discussion. (Now if they'd just drop the scandalous price by half!)

About the Author
Michael Bazzell has been a full time law enforcement officer for the past 16 years. He is currently assigned to the FBI's Cyber Crimes Task Force where he focuses on open source intelligence (OSINT) collection and analysis. He has trained thousands of individuals employed by state and federal agencies, as well as the private sector, in the use of his OSINT techniques. He is also an instructor for Lewis & Clark College teaching Ethical Hacking, Computer Forensics, and Computer Investigation.

Good summary but lacks depth

This is a good book if you are looking for a list of sites that are relevant to Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) gathering. The author aims to add value besides just being a list of categorized web sites by referencing how to access some sites over APIs but it falls short.

Pros:
- good summary of many the sites and tools (it most likely has more than you've thought of)
- explanation and use case for each site is given
- it's a good reference when you're looking for a specific category of information
- could be good for a team member that has 0 knowledge of OSINT
- interprets OSINT with an infosec background unlike other books which is mainly for governmental organizations like the FBI

Cons:
- doesn't go into the background of OSINT from any angle (techniques, theory, personal stories)
- many sites that are referenced are already unavailable or out of date (even though the book was published within the last few months)
- anonymity and information about not disclosing your own information is not discussed in depth

I think this book would be good as an appendix to a real OSINT book that discussed general techniques and advanced tactics.

A useful OSINT tool

I stumbled upon this book through a basic Google search, in an attempt to find more information on open source intelligence collection. As a software trainer specializing in locating people this has become an invaluable tool. it has completely changed the way I address information collection and use. In an ever evolving technical world, with the younger generation assuming the roles of criminals, debtors, etc, this book provides countless pieces of information relevant to locating these people.

If you are in any kind of skip trace/locate/investigative/ or analytic role and finding people is of interest I highly recommend this book.

Excellent natural bodybuilding book, nothing left to chance!

Negrita Jayde writes a remarkably complete, concise, and approachable book on the intricacies of natural bodybuilding. She makes few assumptions about the knowledge level of her readers, but yet the book is so informative that even experienced bodybuilders/competitors won't be bored. She covers everything from visual impressions of the body, symmetry, nutrition, training, supplementation, lighting for training and photographs, definitions of physical (worth the price of the book alone!) condition, and presentation, plus some of the psychology of bodybuilding and that of the reactions of the general public to bodybuilders...the most complete and useful book I've seen...I use my copy continually

I use it as my nutrition bible!

This book is the only book I've found that goes deep into the importance of nutrition in bodybuilding. I refer back to it time and time again and each time I learn something new! It's great for those who just want to shed a little body fat for summer and for those who want to "cut-up" for competition. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about diet, exercise and strength training!

Great Book

I know very little of what is to be known about being a great bodybuilder, beings I have only competed in two bodybuilding competitions. I have read Arnold's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, as well as a book by Franco Columbu, both of which are great, just as this one is. I highly suggest anyone of any caliber to read any of these books. Don't just skim the book either, read it! When I read sliced I felt like Bill was talking directly to me, with comments like "oh I'd look like that too if I ate a lot and lifted that hard", but we all know the little runts that say that could never do what it takes to be the best.
