A - Last Pursuit is a short story set in the Janus Group world - it's the prequel, and the story that inspired me to write a full series. action packed short story!

His last mission was supposedly his ticket to his freedom. But like what most people say, the best is always saved for last. This time, the best was actually the most impossible mission Desh had encountered yet. Not only did his target know about his assassination attempt, there were also other assassins who would go to great lengths to accomplish the task. And a lot of people's lives are at stake.

Desh is brave and driven. He's got a lot of killings done in his life, but this last one was the most important to him because it meant liberty. This book is a measly 18-page story but it is actually packed with action, suspense and thrilling scenes. The ending of Desh's Last Pursuit was quite a bombshell, it actually shook my world. On the last couple of pages in the book, I was left wondering and worrying about Desh's final destination but there's this also the completeness that I felt at the end. Like a smorgasbord of emotions. Piers Platt definitely delivered a one-of-a-kind story!

For a short 18 pages, Piers manages to create a suspense tale involving an assassin with his last target. After 50 kills, he will be free after this one calls it quits. If he fails... there is no room for failure.

Suddenly he has competition, and in a short space of time, the assassin has to pull the trigger and high tail it out of the place before someone find out.

Although short, nothing is left to chance, and it leaves me wishing that this is a proper book with a background, but for a short story it is gripping and entertaining, worth putting this author on your watch list.

Good short, but too short

I don't normally like semi-experimental space stories, but this one was good. It had good imagery for a short story, and a good plot as well. The only problem with it was the ending. It was extremely abrupt. After the story is over, the author mentions that the readers of the story didn't like how short it was. I think it had good potential to keep going. It still wouldn't have been a regular novel size story, but it would have been better without the provided ending.

Could be a lot better

This book is Basketball *For Dummies*. It's supposed to be an introduction to the game. It says right on the front, "Learn: the rules and regulations of the game."

But it's terribly organized, with huge gaps in knowledge. For example, Chapter 3 "The Rules"... makes NO mention of dribbling, except to say it wasn't in the original rules of basketball (p. 31). That's a pretty big omission, don't you think, for a "dummy" trying to learn about basketball for the first time? It talks about the names of various lines, time-outs, etc., but it doesn't actually describe how the game is *played* at all. Then Chapter 4 jumps to "Statistics" (way too early for a beginner, we haven't even learned how to play the game yet!).

But even worse, there are just so many sentences that make no sense for a beginner. Chapter 5, introducing areas to shoot from, says "Elbow is a term for the two spots on the floor that mark the intersection of the foul line extended and the lane line." (p77). What?! What is the foul line? What is the foul line extended? What is the lane line? Are there 2? The court diagram on page 32 lists *none* of those, and neither does the text. I thought this was supposed to be for dummies... I am still totally clueless what this mythical spot called an "elbow" is.

Chapter 6 on Offense talks about the positions... but just has short separate sections on each one. There's no diagram, no introduction of how they work together. A beginner is left with no insight here.

The author talks about "the screen" on p94, saying "a screen frees up a dribbler or an intended receiver. To set a screen, an offensive player without the ball uses her body as a shield to ward off a defender who tries to follow an offensive player." But it doesn't even explain... is a "screen" a move, or a position, or something else? What is "setting" a screen, are there other things you can do with a screen? What does it *look* like -- there's no photo, illustration, description, or *anything*. I'm sure this is all totally obvious to someone who already understands, but for someone who's never heard of a "screen" in their life, this is totally unhelpful. This is supposed to be a book *for dummies*, but by this point in the book, any dummy like myself is going to be totally lost.

Then you realize, the book is pretty terrible at explaining basketball at all. It's really a confused mish-mash -- some parts are only needed for complete beginners, some parts assume you have lots of background knowledge, some parts seem purely for coaches, and then it's full of rather pointless side anecdotes, most of which just aren't interesting or entertaining, honestly. But all these parts are totally mixed up in the same chapters.

So I don't know who this book is supposed to be for. But it's not a good introduction "for dummies", that's for sure.

YouTube videos could help you more...

Sorry, but I guess I'm a little dumber than the average dummy... I needed more help grasping ideas. I thought this book would help me but, unfortunately, I cannot fathom this book as helpful at all. It would have been great to understand how to play, but it looks like YouTube videos are your best bet.

Decent Introduction

I read the 2nd edition of this book, and while some of the "culture" and "current player" sections were dated, the book itself is great. Digger Phelps fills the pages with practical information - from describing a court and the ball, to some of the intracies of the 1-3-1 zone and an example 5 day practice schedule.

As a "Dummies" book, there isn't a ton of depth here, but that's to be expected. I do wish that there was a little less on the history and culture of the game, and more on the practical X & O aspects. Phelps, however, does do a fairly good job of giving the novice to the game enough to get started, and the history and culture pieces certainly provide valuable appreciation for the game itself.

Although nearly 400 pages, it is a relatively easy and fast read. A few more illustrations would be helpful - and some of the photos that accompany the book with the 1-5 players in jerseys were particularly helpful. All in all a good read.

A practical engineering book

If you are looking for a practical handbook or trying to reveal the veil and get a taste of what's CAD of circuit is like, this book is a very good starting point, as the other reviewers mentioned. However, in order to explain some of the mathematical concepts (e.g. Newton Raphson method), the authors choose a very engineering approach, readers with solid mathematical or numerical analysis background will get impatient and sometimes get lost. However, even for math geeks, so long as you really calm down and concentrate on the material, you will find another refreshing perspective and get some engineering insight.

However, in my opinion, I would prefer "Computer Methods for Circuit Analysis and Design" if you choose to study CAD in a scientific way instead of an engineering way. You will greatly appreciate the beauty and preciseness of demonstrating concepts in Jiri Vlach, Kishore Singhal book while enough clear and representative examples are added to make the advance of theory going smoothly.

If you are not a poor student as me, get both ;) There are really few choices of textbook in this area and we are fortunate to see both of them are excellent.

Simply, the best I have read...

It is a must to have for anyone looking for being a simulation software developer...
It puts you in the action from the fist chapter, from the begining, the concepts related to the basic analitical tools that you'll need to understand how a simulation software is capable of caracterize an electric circuit are presented ...It asumes you to know electric circuit analisis, so it don't enphatize the teoretical stuff, instead of this, it tell you how to use it to develop a simulation program. The Numerical stuff necessary for the software is treated as well in the book...
You'll be able to write a basic simulation program using just the concepts presented in the first chapter!!!...

I am delighted to see this abundantly revised text finally hit the stores after what I know to be an arduous labor and delivery. In developing what I hoped to be a capstone magazine journalism course last year, I researched all the magazine, editing, writing, and journalism books I could find and Prijatel and Johnson's was, basically, it. We used it but supplemented it with materials of our own. Now we have this revised version to use and the course will be that much richer.

These authors were both so generous with their time (and their syllabi) with me--and put me in touch with other magazine journalism teachers who are doing good work--while they were buried themselves in the work of the revision. They get that magazines (and all print journalism, by the way) are not dying out by any means. The revenue models are shifting; yes. And some titles aren't tracking their own markets well enough to stay afloat. But new ones are coming alive almost every day. (Just check out the local bookstore--which, if it's a good one, just keeps adding aisles for more magazines. And thank God for Amazon.com, which can make them all findable and subscribable at the touch of a key. They're getting nichier and more personal (O (Oprah), Martha Stewart Living, Lavender, Plenty...the list is endless), and thanks to the Web, more people everywhere are finding them and subscribing to them--even the ones that are online only.

And the barriers to entry into magazine publishing (as well as book publishing) are practically gone. It's now so cheap and easy to publish that smart people with a good idea are launching magazines out of their bedrooms with staffs located all over the world, using tools like InDesign, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Virtual Ticket.

And these out-of-the-box publishers are reinventing mastheads, like Wired did a decade ago. Titles like creative director instead of editor or editorial director. And they're decentralizing authority, because you really CAN do better, more, and faster if you share.

Take James Patterson, the most prolific writer in the country today and a heck of a brand of his own, who realized he could get more of his ideas into print if he collaborated. According to USA Today on Feb. 5, 2007 ("Publishing Juggernaut Patterson Keeps Rolling Along," page 1) Patterson has six novels coming out this year. Four were written with co-authors, including "Step on a Crack," which comes out today. He wrote or co-wrote eight novels among the 100 most popular books of 2006, based on USA Today's Best-Selling Books list. (The author of the USA Today article, Bob Minzesheimer, suggests Patterson might be publishing's answer to Henry Ford. But Ford's idea was economy and volume over beauty and individuality. These books are all unique.)

And Patterson wants to share what he knows, like Prijatel and Johnson (which, by the way, is how the Internet took off and why Bill Gates won't win in the end.) He is developing a "studio system for writers," according to Michal Pietsch, publisher of Little, Brown, who has edited 20 of Patterson's 39 books (as quoted in Minzesheimer's article), "contrary to the image of 'the lonely writer in a garret.'" James Patterson Entertainment has five full-time employees (two of them "embedded" at Little, Brown, Patterson's publisher, according to its president) and is aimed at turning Patterson's ideas into movies as well as books. He's trying to midwife books by helping compatible writers find each other and produce books together, as Patterson himself has done. (If anyone's out there who wants to do this with me, please see contact info below. I want to do this too or I'll never get my own ideas into print.)

And he's sharing the boatloads of money coming in too: Last year he founded the PageTurner Awards, and donated $[...] to schools, libraries, community groups and others who "promote the excitement of books." Next month he'll announce winners of another $[...] in awards, saying he wanted to "find and reward people who spread the joy of reading."

(When I was editor of The History Channel Magazine--its own brilliant brand extension, and a great, if artificially limited success story--I selected from the annual winners of National History Day--an awesome national program designed to get middle-school and high-school-age kids into history--and published their articles in the magazine. I paid them the same thing my limited budget permitted me to pay professional writers--$[...] for a [...]-word article--called it a scholarship and honored the student in the pages of the magazine. I love the closing paragraph of Minzesheimer's article, in which Patterson describes his "Maximum Ride" series for teens: "Give them a story they like, and you can turn them on to reading. Make them read something like "Crime and Punishment" and you can turn them off. They can move on to other books later, but first, you've got to turn them on to reading."

Case in point: When I took my 12-year-old son on a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales six years ago, we were on a ferry headed to the Orkney Islands with the most spectacular scenery imaginable all around us, and guess what my son was doing? His face was buried in the latest, Scottish edition of one of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. It killed me that he was never a reader, despite all the reading I'd done with him--until J.K. Rowling. Now he's a freshman magazine journalism student at Drake University, where Pat Prijatel leads the program and can work her magic on him.

Congratulations to Prijatel and Johnson for delivering to all of us this great book, and thanks to both of them for their generous and selfless contributions to our industry. And particular thanks to Pat Prijatel for passing on what she knows to my son, whose future is terrificly bright--in no small measure because of her.

What didn't Ms. D'Angelo cover? I can't think of anything! A mass of valuable information for anyone considering the Spa business. This book will be an invaluable guide for my business for a long time. It has done the work and the research for me. With the most up to date information for todays marketplace. A comprehensive outline for bringing a vision to reality and beyond. I feel so much more confident now in where to start and how to market and promote my business and how to keep it fresh and viable into the future. I'm so grateful for this book.

Plenty of resources listed to gather more info from, as well as the importance of the marketing plan and how to go about it.
