McLeod-while occasionally repetative-does a really good job of giving a good overview and summarizing the 'big names' in Postcolonial lit, however there is a 2nd edition out there that is better and a little longer. I'd recommend that one over this one. Especially since most professors want the newest edition.

Don't be scared - John Mc Leod is at hand!

Beginning Postcolonialism provides a basic introduction to the nebulous (and sometimes seemingly-inpenetrable) world of post-colonial theory. If you're encountering post-colonial theory for the first time, or you've already been baffled by Bhabha and scared by Spivak, then this is the book for you! Unlike many post-colonialism readers on the market, Beginning Postcolonialism assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. It provides the reader with a basic understanding of the major themes of post-colonial theory and explains in simple terms the main ideas of pre-eminent post-colonial critics. It's well-written, coherently laid-out and is by far the most encouraging and reader-friendly book on the subject I've come across. The extensive bibliography will be of interest to graduate students, but they may otherwise find that this book is not meaty enough to suit their advanced level of study. For the beginner or the confused, however, it's a great resource!

Excellent Overview

I was so happy to find this book. Even though there is a strong emphasis on literary theory, this book was so helpful in giving an overview of the main thinkers, main issues, key historical points, and key tensions in postcolonial theory. I found it much more helpful than A Very Short Introduction to Postcolonialism. The writing is very accessible. An annotated bibliography is included at the end of each chapter. I think this book would be most helpful to read front to back if you are interested in postcolonial theory from a literary studies perspective. If you are in another field, you may want to skip around. You can find selections from this book (including searching keywords) at google books, which I found helpful in identifying the areas I wanted to read and those I wanted to skip.

Nevertheless, according to French Orientalist discourse, the East had fallen into barbarism, inertia, and languished, awaiting the mission civilisatrice by which France followed a heroic undertaking of universal enlightenment. The canonic approach to Orientalism has drawn much criticism, which calls for reexamining the notion of French Orientalism, broadening the scope of enquiry, and exploring the history and ideological strategies behind French formulations of the Orient from the Middle Ages through the twenty-first century. Such an expanded field of investigation reveals that the canonic Orientalist paradigm is not universally applicable, particularly regarding material from before the late eighteenth century. New theoretical, literary, historical, philosophical, and cultural perspectives provide the opportunity to deploy, question, subvert, and resituate canonic Orientalist theories, revealing the continuing evolution and relevance of French Orientalism as a notion with global stakes and material consequences. About the Author
Robert James Coons began his study of Daoism and Chinese culture at the early age of eight. Throughout his childhood he studied Oriental martial arts and always maintained a passion for the study of ideas coming from other cultures and times in history. On suggestion of his teacher, Robert went to China in search of a new perspective on martial arts. Robert currently resides between Canada, where he runs a tea business and meditation club, and Henan China, where he operates an English school and studies Chinese arts and culture.

Great foundation for meditation practice (the Daoist way)

This is a phenomenal book for those who are interested in meditation in general and enjoy beauty and sensibilities of Daoist culture.

Robert has set up a great foundational look at Daoist meditation: its roots in history, its evolution and practical uses today; along with fascinating scientific and metaphysical interpretations of the process.

The introduction and exercises are easy to follow and the text acts a sort of cheerleader to guide you through the process of learning and integrating the new practices.

It is all very encouraging, that is until you get to the deeper ideas later in the book which require more patience and caused me to stumble a bit. The deeper concepts may need to be read slowly a few times to really understand (and perhaps for many years to come).

Robert succinctly concludes with some more practical advice and leaves you wanting more.

I highly recommend this book for those looking for a direct, practical and down to earth approach to meditation.

This book now resides on my favourites shelf along with my tea set; ready to join me in my meditation sessions.

I'm very impressed with how simple the author has made the explanation of these techniques. I've been using them daily for two months now and have seen a dramatic reduction in my stress levels, which have also increased the my clarity of thought.

This is an excellent book. A wealth of knowledge about the hormone testosterone in its various formulations. It goes into great detail about each body organ system and its reactions to low and high levels of testosterone. Anyone prescribing testosterone to patients today would do well to read this superb endocrinology textbook.

As a practitioner I personally put this into use immediately on the first day after I started reading. After reading this book and attending different lectures on the subject I know that I have more current and pertinent information about testosterone than most others, other than perhaps practicing experienced endocrinologists.

I highly recommend this text !!!!!!
