Keith Ansell Pearson holds a Personal Chair in Philosophy at the University of Warwick, UK.

John Mullarkey is Professor of Film and Television Studies at Kingston University, UK. He is the author of Bergson and Philosophy (Edinburgh UP, 1999), Post-Continental Philosophy: An Outline (Continuum, 2006) and Refractions of Reality: Philosophy and the Moving Image (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009).

Henri Bergson (1859-1941) was one of the most important philosophical figures of the earlier twentieth-century, a cult figure in his day and a profound influence on such thinkers and writers as William James, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Gilles Deleuze. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927.

“I wanted to address puppies in this book,” says Soh. “Many puppies will have hot spots caused by mites due to their close proximity to each other. Many natural vets recommend doing nothing because over time they do end up both boosting the puppy's tolerance and immune system which is a good thing, and usually resolve themselves without having any type of oral medication at all.”

Short but well-written and informative.

Treating dog skin diseases externally is not enough to totally heal it, it is also essential to treat dogs with mange by giving them the right diet to improve their immune system. A stronger immune system would make them healthier inside and could prevent them from acquiring any types of diseases -- good lesson I got from this book. “Mange:Understanding and Treating Demodectic Mange in Dogs” is a very informative book explaining what mange is and its treatments. It provided symptoms, treatments and prevention for each types of mange which were easy-to-understand. It also provided what therapies can a dog go through to get rid of mites. If you think your dogs are showing signs of having parasites, this book could be very useful for you.

Very informative!

The author did a great job in taking a probably lesser known and possibly thought of as complex, canine skin disease and was able to artfully explain it in terms that were easy to understand. A great explanation of the causes, symptoms, and possible treatments were explored in detail. I found the chapter on Immune System Management particular informative and useful. If your pet it dealing with mange and you're seeking a better understanding of the disease I definitely suggest you check this book out!

As a dog owner I found this book very helpful. It describes what mange is and what factors can contribute to it, as well as how to treat it. It covers several different treatment options. I would recommend this book to anyone who owns a dog, especially those who are inexperienced in watching for and dealing with this common skin condition.

About the Author
Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, a lama in the B�n tradition of Tibet, presently resides in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is the founder and director of Ligmincha Institute, an organization dedicated to the study and practice of the teachings of the B�n tradition. He was born in Amritsar, India, after his parents fled the Chinese invasion of Tibet and received training from both Buddhist and B�n teachers, attaining the degree of Geshe, the highest academic degree of traditional Tibetan culture. He has been in the United States since 1991 and has taught widely in Europe and America.

Not for those looking for a light, easy to read book, but filled with a wealth of detail that would benefit the serious student

This is a powerful book, derived from the extremely meticulous, dense and detailed Tibetan Buddhist traditions. It describes some potentially very valuable techniques and lays out the Tibetan beliefs about sleep, dreams and the intriguing possibility of meditating while you sleep, as well as the importance of dreams, and the Tibetan science of dreaming lucidly.

It is also a difficult book to comprehend, and you may find yourself reading paragraphs many times, struggling to understand these esoteric teachings. They are not easy to understand, nor to apply. My conclusion after reading this, was that I would like to learn how to utilize this treasure house of Tibetan lore, but that in order to truly reach any real understanding, I would need a teacher of this obscure topic, not easy to find in this country.

Not for those looking for a light, easy to read book, but filled with a wealth of detail that would benefit the serious student.

To help you reach your dreaming body, I want to recommend this book.
What I like most about the book is that it focus on being lucid (present) on our reality (collective dream) as an important way to get to our dreaming self, our lucid dream.
It also stresses that although this life is a "dream" we still have to take responsibility for our actions, especially when they affect our fellow human beings; for, as you know, our egomania can turn this dream into a nightmare of overwhelming suffering.

The dreaming attention is a gateway into Infinity, and the benefits of contacting your dreaming body are many. And I quote:

". . . consciousness is then not bound by space and time and personal history, and the dreamer can meet with real beings, receive teachings from real teachers, and find information helpful to others as well as to him or herself."

"Using the dream to develop freedom from limitations, to overcome obstacles in your path, and finally to recognize your true nature and the true nature of all phenomena, is to use the dream wisely."

Great IF you are prepared to practice Tibetan Buddhism

I intend no disrespect to this wonderful author and these special practices, I only offer this caution for those who may not be Tibetan Buddhists.

I bought this based on the glowing reviews, but I was surprised and disappointed when I read it. This book is entirely steeped in Vajrayana practices and in Tibetan cultural references. Maybe everyone who loved it practices Tibetan Buddhism, complete with with complex visualizations, Guru Yoga, and other exotic practices. If you are one of those people, this is a 5 star book full of wonderful teachings. If you are any other type of spiritual seeker, (for reference, I am Theravada Buddhist, though I have been "empowered" to practice Dzogchen and other forms of Vajrayana Buddhism, I don't practice those activity), or if you are just curious about lucid dreaming, this book really isn't for you. Do you want to visualize Tibetan symbols at various chakras as you fall asleep, and then wake up several times during the night to visualize a different set of symbols at different chakras? (and that's just PART of it) If yes, buy this book. If not, then I suggest you look elsewhere.

Easy to Implement Habits to Health

I happened to see the book written up in The Times & Sunday Times and became intrigued just reading the short article and wanted more. I've read many diet books, but this one came along at just the right time and is encouraging and simple. Most diet books become so bogged down in the weeds of explaining every detail of the way diets work that I always feel that I need to be either a clinician or an insomniac to keep reading. Dr. Nordstrand sets out 12 goals over a 12 week period and focuses on developing healthy habits. I have spent a year listening to books about the power of habit and just didn't know where to start so finding this book at this time was a godsend.

I read the whole book in one sitting and have already incorporated several of the weekly habits in my daily routine the first week being cutting out sugars, including artificial sweeteners... something I have wanted to do for years. I'm 6 days into the first week, have lost a healthy 2 pounds and am convinced that this program will save my health as I had been creeping toward Metabolic Syndrome and diabetes and, without a mindful approach to eating, my health was on a downward trajectory.

The author is an inspiration... a doctor in her 50s with 6 children who looks 30. If someone is looking for a transforming program, written in an easy to follow style and aimed at a lifetime of health, look no further.

I'm writing this review from the perspective of a undergraduate student who has never been exposed to analysis and not as a seasoned mathematician looking back.

From what I understand the treatment of calculus at the undergraduate level has changed significantly in the last few decades with the emphasis being more towards an intuitive understanding of the underlying theory and a heavy emphasis in crunching out calculation quickly and accurately (the ideal treatment of calculus for engineers and applied scientist). The concepts of limits and sets in particular is given only the lightest of treatments. This approach leaves a pretty huge abstract leap for anyone approaching analysis for the first time. Apostol's book provides the perfect bridge from that type of calculus to the fundamental concepts of analysis.

For this reason Mathematical Analysis is one of my favorite books, period! I came across this book while struggling to get through my first course in introductory analysis and I have to say it saved my life! Some people criticizes the author for "spoon feeding" the concepts to the reader, but when you have never had any exposure to analysis before a little spoon feeding goes a long way. Even now as I'm working my way through upper division and first year graduate courses in statistics, this book is still my favorite reference!

Apostol's treatment of basic topology as an extension of set theory is particularly good! Once you have a clear understanding of limits as they relate to topology then you'll finally "get" the whole delta-epsilon arguments from calculus.

As an introductory text to the world of mathematical analysis I don't think this book can be beat. Rosenlicht is a little too terse and Rubin is a little too abstract for a beginner. Dont' get me wrong. Rubin is amazing, but if you do not have a solid familiarity with the basic concepts of sets and their relationship to limits, Rubin's book is going to be out of reach for the beginner. First tackle Apostol then move on to Rubin!

The Cat's Meow

As stated by prior reveiwers, this books does assume that the reader is Mathematically mature (a saying most young Mathematicians despise), in the sense that he/she must be able to follow the logical development of any given arguement, be able to 'see' where and how topics are related as well as fill in any blanks that may present themsevles in a given definition/proof. Apostol, as compared to Rudin, does a nice job of filling in these blanks by adequately providing all of the necessary details within a proof. This book will provide the willing student with a solid foundation in elementary analysis as well as the confidence to persue higher analysis. The only draw back to Apostols book, aside from cost, is that the constant Theorem - Proof - Theorem format can be overwhelming at times and cause some readers to cover material too quickly. Despite the book's cost I would highly recommend this book over "baby" Rudin (that is, Principles of Mathematical Analysis) since Rudin is notorious for not filling in the blanks within a given proof and instead provides seemingly 'slick proofs'.

Great Restoration of a Strange Wonder from Godard

This1965 Jean-Luc Godard film is a weirdly delightful science fiction story from one of France's most overtly political filmmakers. In a future world that would have been foreboding then (but is now a paradigm of the past world of main frame dominance of computing) the story is actually rather funny now. The inimitable Eddie Constantine as Lemmy Caution, the embodiment of a 60's French detective -- tough, harsh, loud, violent and relentlessly inexpressive -- is out to assassinate the designer of a computer system that dominates the lives of a future that looks a lot like the world of 1965. Caution's primary mission is to rescue the designer's daughter, another scientist, played by Anna Karenina in one of the strangest films she ever worked in. Glass skyscrapers, terrible traffic, ghastly fluorescent light everywhere, smoky and noisy cars -- inside and out, like the great Greg Bear, Godard finds the best science fiction setting by projecting out from his own world. And that future was one of total central control with a few humanist outliers in a rear guard action. Godard's film is perfectly consistent with this. Every activity is dominated by a constantly lecturing super computer called Alpha 60. A few rebel humanists survive, wonderfully represented by Akim Tamiroff as he dies in a desolate apartment well away from the world of Godard's today.

As the detective hunts, his unrelenting decisiveness, which includes several shootings taken without warning or dialogue, Alpha 60 begins to fail, setting off one of the film's great sequences, where people (the user community?) start to fall apart themselves. No special effects were required -- instead, shades of Fritz Reinhardt, Godard employs highly choreographed actors to represent the loss of central authority by acting like addressless, spastic peripherals, more hardware than human -- quaking in flickering fluorescent, failing, collapsing, clinging to walls, staggering down hallways -- a living chorus of electronic death. It's wonderfully done and, in 2016, both breathtaking and funny. We know today that the failure of one system is less noticed than the fall of a sparrow, but back then this vision was considered a bold warning. Of course, fair to say, Godard being Godard, he was clearly having almost as much fun with what was then a standard science fiction idea of dystopia as we do in watching this movie fifty years later. And, becoming dated doesn't always make science fiction irrelevant; instead, the film today is a powerful expression of how a bad paradigm can lead to truly magical thinking and toward a worse disaster than the one projected.

Anna Karenina is marvelous as Eddie's unwitting damsel in distress. The distorted, heavy basso voice of Alpha 60 is bizarre, affecting and a lot more fun than Hal in Kubrick's 2001, another film centered on a misbehaving computer, and made just 3 years later. Alphaville, as unsophisticated as a Dick Tracy cartoon in manner of delivery, is still, to my mind, Godard's most memorable film. But then, I also liked Godard's Weekend....

ALPHAVILLE: Under cover as “Ivan Johnson,” reporter for Figaro-Pravda, supertough secret agent Lemmy Caution (Constantine) drives his Ford Galaxy through intersidereal space into Alphaville, the City of Science. His mission: Locate Leonard Vonbraun (formerly Prof. Nosferatu), founder of Alphaville, and bring him back—or liquidate him.

Lemmy discovers that Alphaville is a fascist utopia where the denizens have lost all sense of feeling and live like emotionless robots; where a new “Bible” (i.e., dictionary) is issued daily, always with the omission of new forbidden words, like “conscience” and “tenderness”; a “galaxy” of its own, where Yes means No and where no one says “Why?”; a city where one either “adapts” or is executed; where a man can be condemned to death for acting illogically—like crying when his wife dies. It is a totalitarian technocracy ruled by the dispassionately logical Alpha 60, the “dreadfully unique” most powerful computer ever assembled. And Prof. Vonbraun created it all.

Complicating his mission, Caution finds himself falling in love with Natasha Vonbraun (Karina), the Professor’s delicate and beautiful daughter; a “pretty sphinx” who might yet be saved from the soulless city. Lemmy discovers that Alphaville plans an attack on The Outlands before they destroy its logical perfection. Can Lemmy complete his mission and rescue the human race—and Natasha—before Alpha 60 destroys them all?

Discussion: “All things weird are normal in this [expletive deleted] of cities,” Lemmy mumbles at one point. “It’s not Alphaville, but Zeroville.” And it’s not pop art, but real cinematic art masquerading as pop art. It’s the most sublime philosophy illustrated by the lowest genre forms: part detective thriller (complete with deadpan narration); part film noir; part graphic novel; part sci-fi; part pop art—and part pure poignant poetry. Godard plays with the conventions and limitations of every one of these genres, using their guileless simplicity and artless bluntness to deliver facts of the heart, unvarnished.

And it’s a totally appropriate approach. Within the city limits of Alphaville everything is exaggerated; everything falls into extreme contrasts. The perfect computer utopia looks like our worst nightmare of a 1960s Eastern Bloc hovel—yet it was filmed in Paris, the City of Lights. The stark black and white photography accentuates the black and white philosophies of both Caution and Alpha 60; of his meaningful illogic versus its logic devoid of meaning. They are engaged in a war between head and heart; between darkness and light; between the go-nowhere circle and a straight line “towards those you love.”

Buuuut we’re getting pretty pompous and pedantic. “Alphaville” is giddy fun, and a wonderful oxymoron: a dead-serious parody; a deeply-feeling film easily mistaken for being shallow or pretentious, when it is in fact a parody of pretentiousness; and a film filled with insight and poetry. Time capsule scenes include Caution’s interview with Alpha 60 and the finale, a masterpiece of poignance, tenderness and salvation. If, in this final scene, you cannot feel, cannot intuit, the words Natasha does not know but that Lemmy is waiting for her to say...then you’re as lost as the dead of Alphaville.

Is it trashy art or arty trash? Who cares? The cinematography is pure heaven. The soundtrack is a buzz (even the moments of total silence rock). And the swimming pool scene? Well...you gotta see it to believe it,man. Still an influence on modern film and music, including albums released in 2011 by Bryan Ferry and Hyperbubble, ALPHAVILLE rewards repeated viewings with clues that you cant believe you missed the first time. Its rough, but sweet...brainy, yet fun...totally cliched, yet totally imaginative. I cherish every frame. In a world flooded with films created for the purely logical reason of making money, ALPHAVILLEs visit from a galaxy where movies are made for the love of film is always welcome.

A solid book for serious study

I got this book while preparing to take the GRE. Their choice of words and their explanations are very good. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who does not just want to cramme the words for an exam. If you love english, you will love this book.

This is an amazing book that helps you take control of your hormones via the Endocrine system. Some of the postures are challenging but many are easily accessible to even the neophyte practitioner. I highly recommend this book as a healthy addition to your Yoga practice.

Goes Direct to the Point!

Professor Werner Platzer was teaching Anatomy for a very long time using same sentences and same boring jokes in his class every year! Regardless of his outdated style, Prof. Platzer does a great job in explaining what you need to know as a part of the Anatomy course in med school. If you have some undergrad background, you can easily use this book in med school. However, it might be a little to compact if you have not taken some upper division courses in your undergrad. In addition, this book is not clinically oriented and perhaps not a good choice for the steps!
