Kate Baum is a librarian that resides in the Hudson Valley area of New York. She lives with her husband of 23 years and five children. Her busy household includes a dog and a cat that were both adopted by the local animal shelter. When she isn’t working, cooking, doing laundry, or taking care of the kids, she loves to write down her fantasies. Kate authored the "Girl series" in honor of the group of girlfriends that she grew up with. She wanted to bring back in her stories those memories of times when life was just beginning. That fragile area when you're an adult but still had the freedom to dream because you knew you had time. When each one of us had the world in the palms of our hands. When you were able to make mistakes and easily pick yourself up because you were young and you had a group of girlfriends to watch your back.

Nice Girl

I really enjoyed this book! It was not your typical girl meet (bad) boy, girl falls in love, they live happily ever after. This was more of a slow burn romance. I almost feel like it was more about the growth of the heroine, Grace, than her love story. Of course there is a love story in there or else I would not have enjoyed it as much but it sits in the background quite a bit while Grace's character grows into a woman that is ready to handle a relationship with a bad boy. I did love this about the story. I loved watching Grace learn to accept herself and what she considers her flaws. I do wish there had been more hot scenes between her and the hero, Vinnie.
Mmmmmm, Vinnie. Vinnie is an ex-enforcer for the mob (I have no idea how he got out of that job, it's not mentioned) who has had a very hard life and doesn't have a very high opinion of women or relationships. When he meets Grace, it's not like he was all the sudden BAM "I love her and want her to have my babies!" or anything close. The author does a good job of spreading out their story over the course of several months so the reader doesn't get whiplash over Vinnie and Grace's relationship.
While the whole story is told in first person from Grace's perspective, we do get a lot of information on Vinnie from the supporting characters so we can see his growth as well. Also it is noticeable in his scenes with Grace after a certain point in the story.
There are a few things I didn't love about this book which is why it only got 4 stars from me. The first is a few editing mistakes that, while do not take away from the story as a whole, are there and may bug some people. I also was unsure about the amount of sharing that goes on in this book. Now I don't have a gay bff or anything close but do not think that on Grace's first day of work the IT guy (who happens to be gay) would take her out to coffee and spill almost every piece of information he had on his two bosses. Including things that I felt like were said in confidence to him. I mean, he tells that most people would keep private unless they were best friends and even then they would make them swear to never repeat it. The amount of openness in the respect was a little farfetched for me. I would have like to have seen Grace get some of her information on Vinnie from the source and not as water cooler gossip.
This is a little bit of a spoiler so if they bother you, don't read this part.
The main thing that left me wanting in this book is that they characters don't really get together until the very end of the book. They have a few kisses in the chapters leading up to the ending but there is just one sex scene with Vinnie and Grace. It's a great scene but I would like to know what happens next? I was left with so many questions. I would have loved to have gotten more out of these characters. What will happen when they go back to work? Will Vinnie stay overnight sometimes with her at her dorm? Where does Vinnie live? Does he love her? This is more of a happy for now ending for me than a happily ever after. That is all good but I so wish I had more!! Also, What about Anthony? I keep thinking maybe Dee (one of Grace's BFF's) will visit her in New York and end up getting together with Anthony but I am not sure. It would be awesome if so because I would get more of Grace and Vinnie (I hope).

I will say that I am very anxious to read the other three books in the series. I didn't mention it before but Grace is one of four best friends that find their lives going in different directions after college but they still keep in touch. It was one of the parts I really liked. Almost every week they would do video chats over the internet as well as texts through the week to catch up. I don't have any friends that I am that close to so I really enjoyed reading about women who made their friendship a priority. Overall I really enjoyed this book. There were some laugh out loud moments and a few embarrassing ones as well as one that almost made me cry. I love a book that takes me through all the emotions and leaves me satisfied, even though I would have liked a little more, I still thought it was great!

Sweet story with a mix of the realistic and fantasy.

Grace, is more relatable then many heroines I've read. Young lady, non virgin, but still hasn't reached the blissful "O". I imagine this is more common then the alternative. Good student, employee and generally likable.
Vinnie has a tragic past which leads the way to a tough exterior. Ex Mobster turned PI, body of a giant and a fiery temper are all a little scary, but the real gentleness he possesses is a true contradiction. A gentle giant.
A&V investigations is suppose to be intimidating first "real" job, but with great coworkers, it is anything but. I'd give my left pinkie toe for a job with flexible hours, decent pay, best boss ever, gay best friend coworker and a super hot guy to crush on. While I think the characters are all lovable, this seems a little too perfect to really exist.
The strong attraction that evolves between Grace and Vinnie is compelling. Here's where I think the fantasy is a little harder to swallow. While the six month timeframe is a good length of time, the story itself doesn't really heat up until the end. The "wooing" seems uncharacteristic of such a macho man and the lack of passion is a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, it's really sweet and you my be completely swooning, but for me, the flirty comments needed a little more physical follow through to dampen my panties. There are a couple of well thought out dramatics between Grace and Vinnie that have your emotions routing for them. Will they be together in the end?
Overall, I enjoyed reading "Nice Girl" as my first Kate Baum novel. It was sweet more then sexy, but that type of story has a place in my library along with erotica. I look forward to continuing the girl series.

Nice Girl was surprisingly an unexpected gem of the story for me. I typically run far away from new adult fiction but I find that authors are getting better and better at writing it. Kate Baum spins a well-paced, enjoyable tale that is part coming of age story paired with steamy contemporary romance. It was a nice mix and balance between the two.
Grace Locke leaves her sleepy Midwestern hometown to continue her studies in New York City. Her departure is bittersweet because it marks a new phase in her life. However, it also ends the best part of her life which was fun times with her three best friends since ninth grade−Eve, Janie, and Dee. As with any group, natural roles were assumed among them. Eve was the brave one. Dee was the smart one. Janie was the funny one. And, Grace...dear sweet Grace was the nice one. The quad of friends worked together and played together. The even seemed to lose their virginity together. Oh, not at the same time because that's just...ewww !*LOL* but within a very close window of time. The topic of sex comes up on their last day together and the girls discover that none of them have ever experienced a genuine orgasm. The solution to THAT little problem? The Orgasm Pact...courtesy of Dee. According to her, they all needed to find an older (30ish to their 20's) and more experienced man to meet their physical needs. With Grace's diminished level of self-confidence, she vowed that she would not meet her end of the pact until she grew emotionally stronger.
Fast forward a bit and Grace arrived in New York City a few pounds lighter with a sense of direction and expectation. Her confidence was kick-started by the recent changes in her life and body. She was nowhere near where she wanted to be but she was looking forward expectantly.
Once Grace settled into her new dorm she decided to explore the on-campus job opportunities. She was looking for something that will bolster her resume so retail and food service was out of her career equation. But unfortunately for Grace, who enrolled in the spring semester instead of the fall, all the good resume-building jobs were taken by other students. A little dejected by her discovery, Grace visited the local Starbucks for a caffeine pick-me-up. She happened to notice that they had a job board and spied a position for a secretary. Not really interested in clerical work, Grace almost walked away until she is approached from behind by a cute an energetic young man. He asked her if she was interested in the secretarial and offers it to her on the spot. When Grace responds noncommittally, the young man, Jamie, dragged her out of Starbucks to the place that was doing the hiring -- a private investigative agency. Grace is actually intrigued by the by idea at working at the PI agency. It would give her nice research fodder for her criminology studies. She is interested and even more so when she discovered that the co-owner would accommodate her school schedule and adjust her hours accordingly. Grace has found the perfect job!
Or not!
Enter Vinnie Lewis. Vinnie is the other co-owner of the PI agency. Vinnie is muscular, loud, and threatening. Grace's first encounter with him is when was when she saw a display of his temper and heard him making a death threat against someone. The old Grace tried to rear her head, almost causing the new Grace to cower in fear from the imposing man. But, the new Grace stood her ground, accepted the job, and exceled at it.
Through a course of events, Vinnie and Grace settle upon a tacit truce. Grace actually began to like Vinnie, as he does her. Vinnie showed that he was sweet, caring, and protective. But demons from his past control him, keeping him from being the man he thought Grace needs. But the new Grace fought for her man...and won!
Nice Girl explores friendships and interpersonal relationships in a fun and interesting way. All kinds of relationships (friendships is included in this) are present in the story that just shouldn't work for various reasons -- uh uh...no spoilers here...read it for yourself :) --but work dynamically well.
The secondary characters were stellar. Grace's BFF's and her new friends in New York-- Jamie, Luke, Ivy, Mindy, India, Jamal, Anthony and even Carmella added an enjoyable kaleidoscope of flavor and flair.
I enjoyed the pace that Baum set in the story. This was not a bow-chicka-wow-wow insta-love kinda read. Oh there were smexy times, thanks to Anthony, but not so much between Vinnie and Grace until almost the very end of the story. But, don't get me wrong. The steamy moments between them that led up to smexing were quite potent. However, they were also terribly sweet because hardened ex-thug Vinnie was a teddy bear who courted Grace affectionately. Her very own hero.
Nice Girl was a compelling start to a new series by an up and coming indie author. I definitely look forward to seeing what happens next in the series with Brave Girl.
