I very much liked Drawing Out Law: A Spirit's Guide

In the 1970s I began working on a project involving narratives and heroquests [1]. It was more or less finished in 2004 [2]. Since I started law school in 1979, well after the project began, Drawing Out Law was a welcome perspective, blending as it does the themes of narratives and heroquests in connection with First Nations law.

It was interesting to see the blending of perspectives and the organic nature of the way ideas were presented, often without any prescriptive conclusions. I've been following the ethics writings of [...]Dr. De Mars, which stem from a First Nations perspective [3]. Doing the same with law seems natural.

Dome of the perspectives are though provoking, ones I would never have considered. For example, in a discussion of abortion, he draws an analogy between reproductive rights and the (re) development of tribal entities as mature(ing) life in the body of another nation. Throughout discussing the rights and interests, autonomy and perspective, Borrows refuses to engage in prescription, merely providing multiple reframings with a bottom line that more reframing from a First Nations perspective would be valuable.

The pattern of acknowledging multiple approaches, perspectives and frames, suggesting more in the context of soft bordered stories, but not prescribing a result, prescribing a frame or insisting on any perspective, is what marks the book. It invites thought rather than provides conclusions.

In reading the book it helps if the reader is able to accept Jared Diamond's core premises: (1) that those distant from us in time or culture are not "the other" and (2) regardless, it is wrong to abuse, exploit, exterminate or dominate other groups regardless of whether we consider them inferior or less organized than our reference or not. [4]

If you come to the book rejecting those two premises, you are probably not going to get very far.

The book does not go astray very often. [5] Over and over it presents attacks on the author or his discussions and meets them not with responses or answers, but with narratives and invitations to explore.

I was amazed to see the last chapter was titled after the Wendigo (Windigos in the book). Yet, he makes that work, in a heart touching way.

Recommended.

Anishinabek teachings in a way you wouldn't expect

I am a clinical social worker and native person. This book walks in the two worlds of the dominant culture and the Anishinabek, by blending much of what those of the First Nations/Native perspective with that of Euro-American. In a very traditional manner, there are 4 areas being addressed by 4 illustrations for each - thus the 16 chapters. Perhaps of all the native written books, this one speaks so eloquently to the struggle of narrative/story and the cut and dried legalistic way of thinking.

Read this book with the curiosity of a child and your heart open. You may learn many things about yourself and others.

I met John Borrows at a Conference in Seattle, WA years ago. Been a fan of his writing since then. Reading the skillful story Borrows tells in "Drawing Out Law" draws the reader into life of the indigenous. I loved his portrayal of the importance of relating dreams of the characters in the story. Contemporary society needs the perspective and grounded ecological understanding of Canada's First Nations.

Definitely buy this one

With the astronomical cost of textbooks, I often rent many of mine. Some I buy because I think the book will be useful in the future, or for other classes. This is a must buy. There is a wealth of information in this book. So much that I probably could have used it for my Basic Micro, Clinical Micro, Parisitology and Bacteriology and Virology classes. One book for 5 classes! The writing is good and focused on high-value information. You don't need to read 20 pages to get what you need out of a section. There are some sections that need some work, such as the section on Borrelia. But overall a very good book that is well worth the investment. You'll be using it as a reference for years to come.

Pages Constantly Fell Out

This book was required for a class and unfortunately I did not have time to send it back. The content is helpful, but as soon as I opened the book, and any time after, page after page would fall out. This was VERY frustrating to deal with, especially for a book that had to be used throughout the semester. This definitely needs to be made much better. Other than that, the charts and images are very useful.

Goes to the point!

This book is nice and short. It goes to the point and does not drag endlessly. It has large and helpful diagrams and tables that help clarify any confusing concept. I don't read the entire textbook, I just look at the diagrams, the tables and the main points that perfectly summarize the topic of interest with more than enough information. I recommend this book.

I have no problem with the actual book. However, I received this from Amazon and it's missing over 30 pages! It also has pages completely mixed up and numbered wrong. I was very disappointed when I found out as I use this book for school.

What do we mean by the privatisation process and what are its benefits and disadvantages toward the quality of urban living? Privatisation describes the process of change within the management and ownership of open spaces. It is perceived as a part of Post-modernism and the post-modern city, where the "city provides the context for the social, economic and cultural changes brought about by the globalised new economy" (Minton, A. (2006) p. 5). Corporate governance in shopping malls, business parks, entertainment complexes and business improvement districts can be seen as part of this progression. The trend towards community or joint private ownership of assets such as community centres and parks is an element of the progressive privatisation of public spaces which reduces the pool of openly shared public spaces in towns and cities. With time, a new method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), has emerged to become firmly established as de facto method of evaluating corrosion behavior. This popularity has directly followed the widespread use of impedance techniques in fundamental and applied electrochemistry, and materials science. In this book, EIS is explained, qualitatively and quantitatively, and its applications to corrosion behavior of metallic structures are discussed. Because the corrosion of carbon steel and aluminum is a major infrastructure degradation problem in practically all industries, including the chemical, mineral, materials, and petrochemical industries world-wide, EIS based corrosion experiments were conducted with these metals towards developing models that will guide structural continuity management. OK if you know nothing about the field

I was really taken in by this nice cover i'm embarassed to say.
It is a few chapters of a thesis (cheap typesetting)that doesn't really go into depth and I feel like I could have got just as much free on the internet.
If they do a next edition perhaps it could be worth it.
