"As a writer I'm all over the place," says horror maverick Jack Ketchum (the pseudonym of Dallas Mayr) with typical understatement in his introduction to Peaceable Kingdom, a collection of 32 shorter fictional works from the past decade. You never know what you'll get when you pick up a Ketchum story (the contents range from the "ice-cold" to the "almost cuddly" and include a western, a vampire tale and the Stoker-winning "Gone" and "The Box"), but you can be sure you'll always be surprised-and scared.

About the Author

Jack Ketchum is the pseudonym for a former actor, singer, teacher, literary agent, lumber salesman, and soda jerk––a former flower child and baby boomer who figures that in 1956 Elvis, dinosaurs and horror probably saved his life. His first novel, Off Season, prompted the Village Voice to publicly scold its publisher in print for publishing violent pornography. He personally disagrees but is perfectly happy to let you decide for yourself. His short story The Box won a 1994 Bram Stoker Award from the HWA, his story Gone won again in 2000––and in 2003 he won Stokers for best collection for Peaceable Kingdom and best long fiction for Closing Time. He has written eleven novels, three of which have recently been made into feature films––The Lost, The Girl Next Door, and Red. His stories are collected in The Exit At Toledo Blade Boulevard, Broken on the Wheel of Sex, Peaceable Kingdom, Sleep Disorder (with Edward Lee) and Closing Time and Other Stories. His novella The Crossings was cited by Stephen King in his speech at the 2003 National Book Awards. King has also called him “the scariest man in America” in Entertainment Weekly. He believes King is wrong on this and that the scariest man in America lives across the Potomac.

How Short Stories Are Supposed To Be Written

When one gets to know an author through his or her fiction, one comes to expect a certain sameness or familiarity in their work, a comfortable foundation on which they will build a new, but not entirely unfamiliar story. With Ketchum, one must only expect a well written story, because that is the only similarity you are going to get. He has written so broadly and so well over the years, and this collection is the highlight of a brilliant, if somewhat underappreciated, career. It collects most of his short fiction, contains a few stories exclusive to this edition, and reprints all but two stories from his earlier and long out of print collection The Exit At Toledo Blade Boulevard. If you get the Subterranean Press limited edition, you will find some artwork to two of the stories, if you get the Leisure edition, you will find a new afterword. I recommend them both. Some of these stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry, some will leave you stunned. The range of this author far outshines any other, and you can't go wrong with this book.

Woah!

This book is worth the price alone for the story titled MAIL ORDER, which is one of the best short horror tales I've read in years (think a more demented version of the film 8MM). Kethcum shines with this collection, and the few non-horror tales (plus a western) all keep the readers' interest. Horror fans will eat this up. The thirty-two tales fly by.

Sometimes the lamb eats the lion

Truly a phenomenal anthology, I buzzed through Ketchum's collection like a goose through a field of June-bugs, smacking my lips at every tasty morsel.

There are thirty-two stories here in this collection, way to many to give even the briefest of synopsis for each, but trust me when I say that Ketchum runs a gamut here from realism to surrealism straight through the ethereal and on into the pits of hell itself. Yummy.

A Mother sees her ten year old son for the monster he is, a mysterious empty box that leaves death in its wake, parrots and body-painting in a haunted bar, the unbreakable melding of minds with twins, a dying author's last wish, new methods of gentlemen's justice, just to skim a few teasers.

Of special mention are the tales "Meagan's Law", a horrifying look at a real life monster that twists your views around; "The Great San Diego Sleazy Bimbo Massacre", a brutal and hilarious tale of two barflys and an unwanted husband; "The Rose", in which a tattoo artist frees a slave; and "Lines: Or Like Franco, Is Elvis Still Dead", a realistically scary tale of Fatal Attraction.

Ketchum has proven in this collection that he not only writes well, but can cross whatever genre he chooses successfully. Wild, weird, wonderful, horrific, and even inspiring, this is a must-have for you anthology collection.

Includes Introduction and Afterward by Jack Ketchum, both factually interesting enough to take note of. Enjoy!

A great book... for the right audience

I got this book before there was much information available about it, so when it arrived, it was not quite what I expected.

To the right audience, this book is going to be pure gold. But the right audience is not going to be as broad as most books related to game creation.

This book is really an academic look at game design. It could almost be categorized as "Psychology and Human Behavior" instead of "Computers". The author provides a lot of insight as to what makes a good game experience work and gives useful insights as how to bring elegance to the mechanics of your game in order to keep player's interested.

What this book is NOT:

There's not a line of code, an algorithm, or even a screen shot in this book. It is all text with a couple of high-level interaction diagrams. It will not teach you the latest 3D coding or mobile development methodologies, nor the nuts-and-bolts of structuring game code. It is all about the experience of gaming, and how to make it work for you. It has only minor application to the casual programming hobbyist, and even less if you're game of choice is a simple shoot-em-up game. The ideas presented here really apply to the large, immersive types of games, games where you interact with a large world and how your game mechanics, emotional triggers, and overall narrative make that world more believable. I'd think it would be aimed more at game producers, designers and architects, and not so much to the guys doing the grunt work.

For anyone more than the casual hobbyist, the low cost of this book is bound to give you back its value in insight, so I have no hesitation recommending it. Just understand what it is and what it is not, and if you are the right audience.

The Tao of Gameplay

`Designing Games' asks readers to consider the following:

Why have particular board games such as chess and playing card games based on a standard deck endured for centuries while countless derivatives either failed outright or long ago passed into obscurity?

In more recent times, why do certain computer games and apps become near instant worldwide sensations while countless others - however outwardly similar - lay gathering digital dust on app store shelves?

It's not about coding tricks, optimization, fancy algorithms, or the latest APIs and game engines - `Designing Games' doesn't include a single line of code, not even pseudo-code.

It's also not about graphics - photorealistic, phantasmagorical or otherwise - the book doesn't include a single illustration.

Nor is it about goggles, gloves, glass, fake guitars, or other cutting edge controllers.

While all the above may be components of excellent games, the point of the book is that excellence in any one or more of them, by itself, will not guarantee a game that players will return to again and again.

`Designing Games' is about the delicate balance of factors that, when applied just right, result in gameplay so enticing and satisfying that people have literally devoted their lives to it - even with no practical hope of attaining full mastery.

If you've read game coding books there's often a quick chapter on `playability' and perhaps some tips on scaling performance to hardware, accounting for network traffic, and how providing multiple levels of progressively more complex puzzles will increase the challenge for players.

If you've read game graphics books, you may not even get that: Playability, if it's mentioned at all, is often relegated to `something for the developers to worry about'.

I found Sylvester's description of games as `Engines of Experience' to be a terrific metaphor and conceptual cornerstone for the ideas presented here. He's not afraid to go down the paths of psychology and cognitive response when describing how players react to various event stimuli and the necessity of factoring this into your designs.

Don't worry if that contains a whiff of college psych lectures - Sylvester's writing style is lively and non-academic. He's passionate about game design and it comes through.

The kind of games the book addresses are more complex than classic arcade-style: the territory here is games that involve navigating geography, absorbing knowledge along the way, puzzle-solving, creating immediate and longer-term strategies, and multiplayer interaction.

There's no formal presentation of game theory per se and no math at all to speak of, but I found `Designing Games' to be a very readable and enjoyable (and practical) discussion of the underlying factors that make up good gameplay.

If your head's in the code and you think this stuff doesn't matter or it's too esoteric to concern yourself with, do yourself a favor and broaden your horizons.

I believe having a conceptual framework about what constitutes good gameplay, as described here, will improve your low level technical designs and make you a better engineer.

A very readable insight into the complexity of game design

If there is one thing that becomes clear when you read this book, it is that game design is even more complex than you might imagine. When you play a game that has been well designed, there is an illusion of simplicity, you may think that the design elements are clear and obviously, but there are numerous gameplay elements, knowledge, and effort required to create the design that you are just not visible to the player. This book provides an insight into game design decisions, game play elements, and and the design process that reveals the complexity behind the designs of successful games.

The book is divided into three major sections, engines of experience, game crafting, and process. The engines of experience provides an insight into how game mechanics and game events produce and change emotions in the player, and how these effects can be utilised to generate experiences. The second section provides descriptions of crafting game play elements together with examples of success and failure in these designs from actual games. Topics covered include skill range and development, narrative and pacing, decision making and flow, balance, multiplayer behaviours, motivation and fulfilment, interface and interactions, marketing. The final section on the design process describes the day to day activities that are necessary from game design and development. Topics covered include the pitfalls of over-planning and over-confidence and the importance of iteration, testing methods and common mistakes, dependencies and development priorities, and knowledge creation. This section also discusses the impact of leadership styles and organisation culture on the effectiveness or otherwise for creative teams such as game designers.

The book is very clearly written and very easy to read, despite being very text heavy. Although the book contains much personal experience from the author, it is also well researched and contains examples and advice from other experts to back up the opinion of the author. This book is not really a "how to" of game design, there are no list of rules to follow or exercises to complete. There is however a wealth of examples and descriptions of the different elements that make up a game, and how each of these needs to be considered when designing a game. Having a great idea for a game is not enough, each of these elements must have been thought about, tinkered with, tested, balanced, and iterated to ensure that the game actually works to provide a great experience for the player. This book provides real food for thought on the complexity of game design and the challenges that need to be overcome.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in how games are designed, or who are new to game development. The third section on game design processes contains good descriptions on issues for team working, design, and development that are relevant and familiar to most teams working in software development.

It is therefore not surprising that the US Army Special Forces have been steadily reviving the nearly lost arts of tracking and countertracking for the past several years. From the preface page: "SF Soldiers routinely employ unconventional tactics and techniques while conducting operations unilaterally and with indigenous assistance. The conduct of SF differs from conventional operations in the degree of political risk, operational techniques, independence from friendly support, and dependence on detailed operational intelligence and indigenous assets. The success of SF operations within these parameters depends greatly on the team’s ability to read “signs” for defensive purposes and its ability to use that same knowledge to minimize the signs it leaves when transitioning through hostile terrain. This training circular provides a doctrinal framework for Special Forces personnel involved in tracking and countertracking operations. Tracking, countertracking, and dog-tracker team operations are basic and fundamental to every SF operation whether offensive or defensive in nature. This TC describes and illustrates how to track, how to avoid being tracked, and the theory behind the use of dog-tracker teams. Appendixes A and B provide SF Soldiers with sample tracking logs for their use. This TC provides the basis for common SF tactical application primarily in a rural environment and it briefly discusses urban tracking using dog teams." OK Primer on Visual Man-Tracking

This is a reprint of the United States Army Training Circular (TC 31-34-4), Special Forces Tracking and Counter-Tracking printed September 2009. The problem I have with this publication is that the manual can be downloaded for free online with some simple searches. As for the information in the manual, it is not to bad and for the most part a very good introduction to the skill set. I was a consultant and participant in the writing of this manual so I am a little biased. But I will say it is not the best book on tracking but a good supplement and primer to this art and science. I recommend this book if you prefer to read hard copies, but if you do not care I would down load a pdf copy. I highly recommend the following combat/tactical man-tracking books (listed in no particular order);

"Tactical Tracking Operations" by David Scott-Donelan.
"The Art of Tracking, the Origin of Science" by Louis Liebenberg.
"The SAS Guide to Tracking, New and Revised" by Bob Carss
"Tracking--Signs of Man, Signs of Hope: A Systematic Approach to the Art and Science of Tracking Humans" by David Diaz

Great primer on combat tracking

This one is a reprint of a US army pamphlet on combat tracking.

Unlike most of the army manuals, the photos and diagrams in this one are full color. In fact, if it hadn't been printed in color it would have been worthless since some of the descriptive photos rely upon contrasting tones and colors for their effectiveness.

Of course, as they mention in the front of the book, tracking is something that the best indigenous trackers learn from childhood. Most of us have come to the tracking game rather late and even though we can read a million different books about tracking and learn all about top sign and such, and become proficient at tracking in our areas, it all means squat unless continually developed and regularly practiced. In fact, I'd count tracking as somewhat of a perishable skill, like navigation is. Use it or lose it.

It's only a short book but due to its usefulness it's earned a place on my bushcraft bookshelf as a useful primer for the novice before moving onto more advanced material.

Very concise introduction to tracking /counter tracking / dog tracking

This small US military manual is designed to be a quick review or notes for a much more comprehensive tracking / counter tracking and dog tracking / counter tracking course. As such, the material is presented in lists and short paragraphs. Each paragraph is numbered for quick reference. This is not a satisfactory introduction to tracking, nor a text useful to teach tracking.

While much of value is presented, the material would have to be presented in an outdoor workshop or outdoor tracking laboratory for retention of the learners. This book would then serve as a quick reference back for review.

The images are good. The wording is military conciseness through and through. There are minimal redundancy or memory aids presented.

Unless I have someone who wants a quick review, this book will sit on my shelf.

The novel Snowdrop Waltz is a warm defense of poor people in Stavanger in the 1870s.

“I've wanted to describe life stories, struggling young people with an unbending will to live. Just as snowdrops break their way through the snow,” says author Dag Gustav Gundersen.

The latter half of the nineteenth century is also a particularly interesting period. The emergence of modern Norway began. And in Stavanger, everything peaked because the economy and living conditions fluctuated far more here than most other places. The herring disappeared, the tall-ship area ended, and the sardine-canning industry emerged.

“I describe ordinary people and am trying to portray society as it looked from below-from the point of so desperately poor people that we can hardly comprehend now 130 years after,” says Storla.

Simultaneously with the distress, Stavanger experienced a major revival, and new beliefs are challenging the old. This also plays a central role in Snowdrop Waltz.

“The famous author Alexander Kielland made a unilaterally negative description of the layman movement in his novels, a portrait that in many ways has been allowed to be unchallenged. However, there are a rich source material documenting the importance of the layman-temperance-and later labor movements; they can hardly be overstated when it comes to their importance to social development and democracy. At the chapel, Bethany arose the previously unthinkable communion between people of both sexes and different classes. Ordinary people spoke up in the meetings, and were able to advocate their views and proclaim their faith,” says Storla.

About the Author

Dag Gustav Gundersen Storla (born 1962) is a Norwegian physician, a former medical missionary to Bangladesh. Currently he works as a specialist in internal medicine and infectious diseases at Lovisenberg Diakonale Hospital in Oslo. He has a special interest in the local history of his hometown, Stavanger, as well as the Norwegian pioneers of the West. He has published four novels in Norwegian: The Knight on the White Horse (1995), Snowdrop Waltz (2009), Red Campion (2012) and Consider the Lilies How They Grow (2015).
